I did an 8 month stint with Lockheed doing some final stress analysis updates to the crew capsule. Hope all systems work and it is successful. It is unreal how many systems have to work perfectly and the complexity of these systems. Just the pumps feeding fuel to the engines is insane.

It's kind of depressing that 56 yrs after we landed on the moon we are still getting there the same way with a very similar launch system, being multi-stage platform. It's almost like we have not done it before. Oh oh....I might start something there with moon landing deniers.

We did it then using slide rules.

Very few people today even know what a slide rule is, let alone know how to use one.

I have to say that I'm a little disappointed to learn that we aren't landing on the moon this time.

All of the hype makes it seem like we are going back to the moon, first time in 50+ years, yada yada. We are just flying around it and coming home.

I'll tune in when we have someone walking on it.

Maybe, but if this is manned flight, I celebrate it, regardless.

Lets face it -- we will use automation for most flights -- but when people are on board, that's the true test.

I got a box of my grandfathers engineering books and tools. He had a bunch of slide rules and calculation wheels.

He went to LSU after leaving the marines after the Korean War.

Now I can down load a free app that will do what that whole box was needed to do.

Really wish Elon would have sidetracked his Mars focus with a trip to the moon.

Godspeed & safe travels for the crew.

I really don't get the point of the mission....why are we sending people to go around the moon like we haven't done this before?

Very exciting time. Will the launch be before Orange’s speech this evening?

@ Jax - I’m jel. That should be a good time.

I have the same questions. If it’s just a drive-by, shouldn’t that be an unmanned vehicle?

We’ve already established we can support people in space.

But I think it has to be similar reasoning used when redesigned earth craft are still tested before beginning more critical roles. Boeing tests their new planes with humans before the cabins are filled with more humans.

The TV networks have gone all nostalgic on us.

I'm old enough to remember Apollo 8 in 1968. I was 8 years old at the time.

This is Apollo 8 all over again.

That mission was already done a few years ago.

Artemis Missions
1. Do it unmanned
2. Fly by manned.
3. Test lander
4. Manned landing - currently scheduled for 2028

That was Artemis I back in 2022.

This is the manned version of the trip.

Artemis III is planned to be a lunar landing. NASA kinda promised a DEI thing of a woman and a person of color on that one.

I expect that Artemis III will probably be more like Apollo X, where it’s a test drive of everything except the landing. (It’s widely rumored they only filled the lander fuel tanks half way to keep Gene Cernan from going rogue and landing on the moon on the Apollo X mission. Also, Cernan radio transcripts are pretty funny with how frequently he uses “baby” when talking to people and the spacecraft)

I think I remember Trump saying something about the great advantage of a Military base in the moon. Who knows what we find up there.

I still to this day geek out over the fact that an iPhone has a massive amount of computing power compared to what NASA used back then.
