Amazing for a SEC pitcher to be so inconsistent

He’s a freshman
He will get it figured out

So far he hasn't lived up to the hype.

In case you haven’t noticed LSU pitchers as a group are giving up a lot of walks. It’s not just him.

Can you throw strikes consistently?

Schmidt figured it out
Cam Johnson has not
Who knows about Ricken

Did Ricken actually have a ton of hype to live up to coming into this year? I never heard much about him honestly. Nothing like Schmidt the previous year.

I know shite about pitching but it seems like a lot of guys who have trouble throwing a strike find their way into the premier team of D1 baseball

Paz had more hype but Ricken was a good prospect.
Paz shouldn’t be on campus according to most. Coming off tj is the only reason he is here.

They have to be overthinking

Well then it is time to cut his sorry, 19 year old arse loose. He’s had plenty of time to become a golden spikes winner and clearly doesn’t have it. Jay Johnson made a huge mistake by recruiting him. NEXT!

Holler at him and ask, then tell him what he’s doing wrong Coach.

Yeah, it's amazing that a kid just out of high school may be struggling a bit to figure out how to keep the ball in the strike zone when he can no longer simply rear back and throw heat to overwhelm most hitters.
I swear, some of you have no real concept of levels of competition.

There is much to the transition from high school to college. High school upper 80s will get you far and in college you better have another pitch or two. These freshman could likely count on their fast balls. Not often do you see a kid who can throw several pitches for consistent strikes.

1. You can’t get away with misses in college like you could in HS.
2. I think all this technology that they are being introduced to in college with the pitch labs and spin rate tracking plays a huge part in control. They are tweaking grips, mechanics, arm slot, etc to maximize spin rate and tap into more velocity. Not saying it’s a bad thing, but trying to do that and have pinpoint control could explain a lot of these youngsters’ ability to throw strikes consistently.

I think a lot of folks simply don't understand what LSU is trying to do in baseball. We're not taking guys who can throw strikes all the time, because those guys would be batting practice for the opposition. We're taking guys who can get the ball past the batter, and those guys need to be developed in order for them to throw that pitch as a strike.
You don't find a Skenes in high school who is already polished, simple as that.

It's halfway through his true freshman year. He's got a sub-4.00 ERA. Opponents are batting .209 against him. Schmidt looked as bad or worse last year, and I think he's doing just fine right now.

Inexperience. High school doesn’t require tight controls on location and pitch type. Patience for these kids is what is required while they develop next level skills.

I will throw this into the conversation Re: Schmidt’s freshman year.
i’m SEC Play he had a 27 ERA 1 K to 11BB
Outside SEC play he had a 3.26 ERA and 40 K to 11 BB
If I offered you a freshmen with his stuff from a Sun Belt Team with his OOC numbers in the portal you’d want to jump all over him. He just wasn’t SEC ready as a freshmen.
