I am reading the Greatest Game Ever Played and it got me thinking….
Is Francis Ouimet as an amateur winning the US Open the top unexpected sports moment ever? He had basically no access to the course and had to basically train in his yard and a field. While the professionals and rich had the access. Just incredible how someone so young did that.

The US hockey in 1980 would register as well. It could be a game, a one single play for a player. What are your thoughts?

Padres relief pitcher Daniel Camarena hitting a grand slam off Max Scherzer. Camarena was only hitting for himself because the Padres were getting worked in the game (although that grand slam ended up starting a rally and they eventually won). It was only one of six career games Camarena ever pitched in before he was sent back to the minors and never recalled to the majors.

This happened in 2021 when Scherzer was still an elite starter. He finished 3rd in Cy Young voting that season.

Chaminade over Virginia, people didn’t actually believe that game occurred when they saw the score

Dock Ellis thinking he was starter the game tomorrow, decided to take acid after lunch the day he actually pitched. By game time he couldn't feel the ball, and thought the home plate umpire was Richard Nixon

"And once I thought I was pitching a baseball to Jimi Hendrix, who to me was holding a guitar and swinging it over the plate."

He walked 8, but threw a complete game no-hitter vs Padres.

That’s crazy. That’s what I was looking for starting this. I vaguely remember camarena. Reminds me of Justin Linn when he basically took over New York for a month.

I saw a clip of the amateur Sam Bennett from a few years back basically in final group of the masters. Forgot about him. He is on the korn ferry tour now.

#16 University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) over #1 Virginia.

It wasn't just that they won, it was how they won. They didn't win on a last-second heave. They curbstomped Virginia by 20.

His 1964 victory is considered one of the greatest Olympic upsets because he was a virtual unknown going into the event. He was the first non-European to win the Olympic event and remains the only winner from the Americas. He was also a United States Marine officer.

Speaking of movies:

Kirk Gibsons walk off home run in the 1988 World Series.

From Wikipedia; “Gibson is perhaps best known for his one and only plate appearance in the 1988 World Series against the Oakland Athletics. Having injured both legs during the NLCS, Gibson was not expected to play at all. In Game 1, however, with the Dodgers trailing by a score of 4–3, Mike Davis on first base, and two out in the ninth inning, manager Tommy Lasorda unexpectedly inserted his hobbled league MVP as a pinch hitter. Gibson, limping back and forth between a pulled left hamstring and a swollen right knee, made his way to the plate to face Oakland's future Hall of Fame closer Dennis Eckersley. Gibson quickly got behind in the count 0–2, but laid off of a pair of outside pitches that were called balls. He then kept the count at 2–2 by fouling off a pitch. On the seventh pitch of his at-bat, a ball, Davis stole second. With an awkward, almost casual swing, Gibson used pure upper-body strength—and according to Gibson, advanced scouting-based knowledge of what the pitcher would likely throw with that count—to smack a 3–2 backdoor slider over the right-field fence. He hobbled around the bases and pumped his right fist as his jubilant teammates stormed the field. The Dodgers won the game, 5–4, and won the World Series, four games to one.“

2001?

The only team winning the Super Bowl that year was "The Patriots."

First one that came to mind for me as well.

There's not exactly a 1:1 American sports equivalent but would be roughly akin to the Akron Rubberbacks or Birmingham Barons winning the World Series or San Jose State or Louisiana Tech winning the FBS national title.
