There's been a term for this transitionary cohort: Xennials

quote:

Xennials are a micro-generation born between roughly 1977 and 1985, bridging Generation X and Millennials. Often called the "Oregon Trail Generation," they experienced an analog childhood and a digital adulthood, fostering high adaptability, "digital native" skills, and a blend of Gen X cynicism with Millennial optimism.

Yes, I was born in that range and we are unique in that we have a ton of memories of both the pre-internet age and the post-internet age. Older people mostly just knew the world before and younger people only know the world after.

Lotta things are better, lotta things worse. We traded more memorable experiences for forgettable convenience.

I think there was a period labeled as this, which occurred with Obama and the world not ending after the 2008/2009 crash, once the economy got a little better. That's at least where the AI got the idea from.

Wiki article

quote:

Millennial optimism is a 2020s cultural trend and neologism that emerged on TikTok in 2025. The term has been described as encompassing late Generation Z's nostalgia for 2010s Millennial youth culture and has been connected to the 2026 is the new 2016 trend.[1][2]

Thank God you were pretty limited in terms of damage you could do on ICQ and AIM.

Once again they give 1986’ers the shaft, just slide us in we are 40 lol

I was a kid pre-internet as well, our first mobile phone was that car one you plugged into the cigarette lighter that you kept in a big black leather case. First video games I ever played were on floppy disk

Got my first cell phone, a sweet arse Nokia right before high school. Grew up fishing, riding bikes, roller blading and street hockey, tackle football with all the neighborhood kids. Blockbuster visits

I don’t want to be a millennial either jerks

My brother was born in 1987 and we were ahead of the curve on the internet and I consider him an Xennial (along with my sister who was born in 1977), but that's getting into the cutoff

Confirmed Xennial checking in. '83. This echoes what I've always felt....I don't particularly identify with millennials outside of being able to use technology. Overall I have more in common with Gen Xers.

It's nice to be able to use and understand modern tech, but realize how awful it's been for society as a whole and be able to separate from it/put it down/not feel the compulsion to use it or constantly keep up with the Joneses.

Older folks ARE right...things WERE better in many ways for our society without all of this nonsense tech. And we Xennials know how to live without it just fine.

You lost your argument when you admitted to having a cell phone in junior high.

I had a cell phone in the 8th grade whose sole purpose in life was to call my mother after football practice ended so she didn't have to sit there and wait

From playing Jeopardy and Wheel of fortune on our Tandy 1000 in the late 80s to downloading Master P and Eminem with limewire on the Dell in the late 90s.
