Major Bay Area tech company Oracle reportedly axed thousands of jobs in a massive layoff Tuesday, notifying fired employees they were jobless in an email sent at 6 a.m..

The email from one of the world’s largest software companies, chaired by billionaire Larry Ellison, informed employees across multiple regions that Tuesday would be their last day at the company.

“After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organizational change,” copies of the email viewed by Business Insider stated.

Employees in the US, India, Canada and other regions reported getting the news that was from “Oracle Leadership,” per RollingOut.

Two people familiar with the matter confirmed to CNBC that the layoffs involved thousands of jobs.

Oracle told The California Post that it would decline comment on how many jobs were being cut.

As of May 2025, the software company employed around 162,0000 full-time employees, according to its annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

They might be able to claim unemployment for a while.

One person wrote about their dad being laid off after 20 years with the company and reportedly just two years before he was going to retire. “Not even a phone call. The companies are evil.”

Could you imagine it being your job to make thousands and thousands of phone calls.

I get what this person is saying, but at this level it's better to just rip off the band aid and send out the mass emails

I talked tonight a friend who was laid off this morning from oracle

He was doing his usual meetings, one with an overseas client he was schedule to meet with in a few weeks , someone else texted him and said did you get laid off? He hadn’t checked his email yet this morning as his meeting was first thing. Finished the meeting, checked his email, boom, laid off.
He was very close to retirement anyway. I asked how the severance was structured and he Said he’s getting 1 month salary and 1 week of severance for each year at oracle up to 20 years was the cap. He’s been there since the early 90’s . He said he never even heard from his boss at all , no sorry or nothing. Shameful

I will 100% guarantee you they’re letting a portion of low performers go, but are removing a LARGE number of “tenured” employees. That’s code for older and more expensive employees. It happened to me last Fall. I inadvertently ended up with a list of people let go. There were no names, but ages, titles, and severance eligibility were included. It’s all about removing expense from the bottom line.
