Why the abject hatred for Duke basketball?

I suppose I understood once, but it’s funny to me how people are celebrating Duke’s exit from the tournament when the team that beat them has won six national championships in the sport in the last 25 years. UConn has more national titles in that span than Duke has total.

Mostly because of cocky and/or nerdy white players that won a lot and were coached by a guy that looked like a rat.

People love to hate on success. All fanbases are intolerable when they aren't your own. Florida fans suck. Michigan fans suck. UNC fans suck. FSU fans are...broken.

For me it is several encounters with their dumbass fans. I know that doesn’t narrow things down to Duke. But these involved particularly douchey behavior. And living in Atlanta made it worse. Plus I have dozens of diehard UNC-fan friends, so I’ve been indoctrinated.
Ultimately it’s all meaningless. But it’s fun pet fake enmity.

I think the difference between Duke and UConn is that it seems like Duke gets every fricking call every game while UConn isn’t nearly as favored.

Some of it is probably a combination of race and class based. People perceive the players as privileged white kids from private schools. Weirdly enough a lot of the more intense dislike ironically seems to come from guys who actually are that demographic (white people who went to private schools).
The reputation doesn't have to make sense to be a perception. Certainly guys like Elton Brand and Zion are fundamentally not there to play school.
Some of it is the heavy media attention. They have been probably the most reliable media draw in college basketball going back to the Laettner, Hurley, and Hill team. Unless that's your team that's obnoxious.

People don’t hate Duke for race. They hate Duke because they’re always loaded with McDonald’s AAs and it’s an elitist institution that had its dick sucked by national media for decades.
