It is awful & a box office flop. Its one of those "artsy" films based on a weirdo (HST) & if you don't like it, well you're just not cool.

I love Fear and Loathing Las Vegas. Maybe you just have to be a fan of Johnny Depp to appreciate it.

I saw this in theater when it first came out and hated it. Haven't seen it since. Only drug addicts think it's good.

It’s really just Hunter S Thompson fans that love it, and it’s a wild true story of the shite he was actually doing while working. I loved it as a teen because I thought any movie about drugs was cool, but I can see now it’s more of a cult classic and not for everybody

This movie was very influential in my decision not to be a user of recreational drugs. I mean, who the frick wants to act like that…on purpose?

Its not a movie for normies.

Where The Buffalo Roam was a better movie for sure.

It helps if you're a Hunter S. Thompson fan or a degenerate alcoholic/druggie.

I read the book. And thought the book was great.
The books, pretty much spot on with the film.
I enjoyed the film. Yes. I did. After finding more about HST. Not a fan of the human being.

I loved the book and thought the film did a pretty good job. I like the earlier version with Bill Murray too.

Did you really pay attention?
quote:
We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60's. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling "consciousness expansion" without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously... All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force - is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.
quote:
And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of old and evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look west, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

This.
The more you have read HST and the more you like it, the more you are likely to enjoy the movie. That or being really frickin high.

I enjoyed it for what it was. I tried to get a coworker to see it years ago and he quit watching it 30 minutes in. Said it was the dumbest thing ever. I laugh watching it. I enjoy HST writing in it.
