'Trying to Get a Job in 2026 is a Humiliation Ritual'

Guy mentioned some stats that stuck with me--nowadays the average person needs to send out 1,200 job applications to get a job. 40 years ago, the average person only needed to send out 3 job applications to get a job. Yes, the old talk to the manager and give him a firm handshake joke.

Also said the average age of a new hire nowadays is 43 years old. This tracks with the stuff you hear about the average age of a first-time home buyer being 40 years old and the average age of people getting married and having kids getting older and older too. Obviously it's all intertwined and why you're hearing that dating and everything else is a disaster now.

Said the only reason AI hasn't taken over more jobs yet is because the companies haven't figured out how to handle liability for mistakes made by AI.

The guy doesn't mention it, but there's a real problem for older workers too--if they get laid off or fired, it's very difficult to get another job since they are considered overqualified and it would be cheaper to hire someone newer anyway.

Add mass immigration, H1Bs, DEI and the looming inevitability of AI, and it's a nightmare out there with s*** bound to hit the fan at some point.

People are using AI to send out 1000s of applications a day which makes companies use AI to sort through the 1000s of applications they get

Its great

Why don’t these millenials walk up to the foreman and give him a firm handshake and ask for a job like us boomers?

The guy in the video mentions this. He said they penalize applicants for using AI to write their resumes, but the corporations use AI to filter the resumes. AI for me but not for thee.

It stinks that you can't just walk into a place and apply directly anymore.

Isn’t that completely contradictory to

McDonald’s takes them over the counter I’ve heard.

He is likely referencing 50s, 60s, 70s.

There is a lot of data that shows how those of older ages have a much harder time getting hired for a multitude of reasons.

Plan accordingly and build your retirement accounts when you are younger.

I doubt it... I see "text to apply" messages on their signs.

All these "entry level" jobs that require a degree, 5 years of experience, and 3 interviews is holding a lot of people back. This is for a job that pays $13 an hour too.

I simply refuse to believe the average person is sending out 1,200 legit applications.

That’s just not true.

It is usually a few hundred. (EDIT)

Look into it. It is insane.

A lot has to do with AI filtering programs that drop multitudes immediately, ghost jobs, and simply the number of individuals applying for all manner of employment.

If there are thousands, tens of thousands even of job openings…why isn’t anyone actually hiring anyone?

It's a bit more than that, but this is a big one. Governance has been a challenge.

You should look into the concept of “ghost jobs”.

"Ghost jobs" are online job postings for roles that do not exist or that employers have no immediate intention to fill, with research indicating up to 34% of companies currently use them. These listings, often used to build talent pipelines, signal growth, or manage current staff, waste applicant time and create false impressions of a robust job market.

One of many factors.

Because doing anything in person is “beneath” them.

My sister ran into this a few years ago.. she wasted a good amount of time sending out applications for jobs that when she followed up on was told they aren't actually hiring at the moment.

Another fun thing that exists now are the scam listings.

They have a fee to apply or they are simply there to obtain data to sell, much like social media sites.

The job market is fricking shitty for applicants.
