Thoughts on Game of Thrones:

I've never seen Game of Thrones before, but after years of everyone convincing me to watch it, I'll finally start to do so probably tonight. It's obviously considered one of the greatest shows of all time. I just want to hear your thoughts and opinions on how good you think it is, how bad the ending was, etc. Or anything else I should expect watching it.
Other than some character names and who they look like, and maybe the main plot of the whole show, I'm very unfamiliar with it.

I envy you getting to watch for the first time. I'm currently reading the books and I'm almost finished. Then I play on doing a rewatch. I really enjoyed it. I've never been a fan of that type of genre except for Lord of the Rings, but I really enjoyed this. The ending was bad, very disappointing.
Be prepared to binge!
Come back and share your thoughts. It's been a while since I've chatted with someone who hasn't seen it.

Way too much to type. But just make sure you pay attention. There's a lot going on and can get confusing.

Despite the bad ending, IMO, it’s still up there with the best shows of all time. It’s 1A for me with 1B being the sopranos and Breaking Bad being a close 2nd.
I think too many people let the ending detract from the greatness of the previous seasons. The show had the world in an absolute choke hold and is the only show I can remember where everyone, everywhere shut down whatever they were doing at 8pm on Sunday nights because it was literal must see tv and you didn’t want to miss it live. I get that the bad ending HAS to count against it and it absolutely should, but it dosent keep it from being one of the GOATS for me personally.
Enjoy the ride. And don’t get to attached to characters, they’re probably going to die.

Its not and it is very repetitive. Season One was good, but goes down hill fast from there. The more the writers do not have source material the more ridiculious it becomes.

I am completely with you was never really a fan of the fantasy genre in general except for Lord of the Rings in fairly recent years. But there's a reason why it's considered an all time show so I guess I'll find out.

I have plenty. I'll keep it short and spoiler free.

You're going to really like the first 4 seasons. They are hard to beat. You might even like most of season 8. But unfortunately, you are going to have to watch the same last couple of episodes that we all did.

*used to be considered one for the greatest shows. For the majority of it's run, it would be in that discussion.

When it's good, like I said, it's hard to beat. Characters are great, dialogue is great, world is immersive, hot chicks for the most part, good action, good fantasy, etc. First few seasons stick very close to some really good source material.

how bad the ending was,
Given how great it was for the majority of it's run, it's easily the worst ending in the history of TV and it's not even close. In just a few episodes, they undo virtually every good story line they have built up and ruin story arc being developed for 8 seasons. It starts to come off the rails in season 6 but doesn't crash and burn until the end. I'd give spoilers if I went into any more details but I hate it with a passion. I swore I never would do a rewatch but years after I finally did and the ending is just as bad as it was before.

It's just a TV show. Enjoy the ride. Hope you like the ending more than the majority did. It seems like people that weren't invested in watching it weekly and deep into the lore and source didn't care as much so you might enjoy all of it.

THIS!!!!
I always wish I could go back in time and watch game of thrones, breaking bad, Sopranos, the wire etc.
Are some episodes not that great yea, is the ending not the best, yea…. But just enjoy it. There are few shows that are that awesome and this is one of them

Another thing I enjoyed, a lot of the actors were pretty much unknown...well to me anyways.

LOST says hold my beer. I probably still have the map somewhere.
GoT is the goat for me though, with BB a very close 2nd.

First 4 seasons are near perfect but the ending is worse than you can possibly imagine and it’s not like a sitcom where you can just say it ran its course, the entire plot is driven from scene 1 by the ultimate ending the show is pushing towards, and for some reason the show runners actively made every bad decision you possibly could to give you the worst ending you could imagine
I can’t bring myself to watch any of the older episodes because of how bad the ending is. The ending taints the work made before it.

You'll love it for the 1st 4 seasons. It slowly starts unraveling after that. Season 8 will disappoint you because it's extremely rushed and the ending is dull. It's definitely worth watching just for the first 4 season's alone.

stop at the end of season 6. The last shot of the season is an epic panorama that serves as a satisfying ending and while leaving you wanting more, will spare you the clown show that the last two seasons become. You will leave loving the show with no anger or disappointment

Stop after Season 6 and just imagine whatever happens after that. Whatever you imagine, it's sure to be better than what we got.
S7 isn't unwatchable but S6 has a banger ending.

I'm in my first ever rewatch and just started season 7. It has been great for the most part, but I know the best is behind me.

Pretty much this. I went from suggesting the books and the tv series to everyone to never suggesting anyone read or watch the series ever again after the last season. And I don't see that changing. First 4 seasons are among the best put to screen, 5 and 6 fall off but has some of the best episodes in the series. 7 is straight mediocre fan service and of course 8 is straight hot garbage.

Some of the scenes and episodes are just so elite
Yes it ended badly. But the journey up to that is as good as TV gets
I did a rewatch last summer and really enjoyed it all over again

The show's greatness is equal to the terribleness of the ending.

And dream up whatever ending you like. It’ll be better than what they actually did.
ETA: I see that blueboy has the same advice.

It's an overall exceptional show. The early and mid season writing is peak political intrigue. its got a handful of episodes that are among the best in TV.
The visual spectacle of the later seasons is matched with how poorly they are written. That being said, it's worth the watch from S1E1 to finale.
It has some of the best character development in all of TV as well.
