Paging the OT Refrigerator/Freezer experts

I have a Maytag with the bottom freezer drawer. It’s probably about 15-20 years old. It was with the house when I moved in, so I took it. The other night, I noticed the freezer wasn’t working well. The fan was on, and still works, but it’s not freezing. It’s cool, but meat had started to thaw. I moved to the garage freezer for the time being. The refrigerator is still operating fine.
The manual is for W10175446A. No clue if that’s a model number or what. I’ve done some google and have some ideas, but I’ve never worked on an appliance before.

My 15 year old Kenmore was doing the same thing about 4 years ago. I called the repair guy and he reset a few codes and said 'it's probably a coolant issue and we don't service the coolant system.' When I asked why not, he said because it's almost always more than the fridge is worth, like $600-700.
I bought a Hisense French Door Fridge from Lowe's and I really like it. The water dispenser is inside the fridge, and there's no ice dispenser, so the doors are flat. The door compartments are deep, which is nice for condiment storage. The doors need a little extra push to shut all the way, but you get used to it. Overall, I recommend it for the price.
$1200 for 26.6cf at Lowe's

You may get more/better responses on the H/G Board. This has happened to me before.
DIY - Simple - could be ice build-up in the passage/air-way between the fridge compartment and the freezer compartment. You can defrost or if you are impatient, stick a hair dryer in there.
DIY Fairly Simple - the fan that moves air between compartments could have gone out. Pretty simple to replace.
OR...
Coils dirty
Low on Freon

That’s essentially my question. Is it something I can DIY and clean, or is it time to get a new one? I’m prepared to bite the bullet.

Make sure your inside freezer isn’t packed full. The combo fridge freezer needs to move air through the chamber. It’s its slap as full it can’t. My appliance repair guy told me about this.

Clean the coils on the back. If that doesn’t help your compressor is probably about to go out. Not a super cheap fix and it may be worth more than the fridge.

That's odd.
Typically, the "Cold" starts at the freezer and the fan carries the cold to the fridge area. No cold freezer, no cold fridge.
Could be a Defrost Timer stuck in the ON position or just totally inop.

Just had this exact issue with my Kenmore. Cleaned the coils, defrosted, changed the thermistor in freezer. Nothing worked, freezer won't get below 32 degrees. Figured its something in the sealed system so I just bought a new one and moved the old one into garage as a third refrigerator.

We just bought a new-to-us home last summer with a similar age Maytag fridge that started exhibiting similar behavior. Had a repairman look at it and replace the auto defrost circuit because it was stuck open. When that didn't cure the problem, we were advised to replace it because the next step was the master control board and we could end up throwing money into a problem that even if it got better would end up with a compressor failure in the near future which would be nearly as much as a new replacement.
Same age Maytag electric stove shorted the main oven heating element taking down the entire control board with it. Replaced instead of repaired as well.
Appliances aren't built to last like they used to, so I've become a big advocate for buying the extended warranty on new units when I get one. Repairman told me something I'd been told by another guy in our previous home to avoid Samsung like the plague. The latest guy told us Whirlpool, GE, Bosch (in no particular order) were what he sees the least on his calls. Also suggested to get the most basic unit that still meets your needs.

I’m a single guy. I don’t have a full fridge, used an ice maker inside the drawer for a decade. I don’t need anything fancy at all. I’m halfway tempted to just switch it out with the garage one and call it a day

Ask chatGPT. They helped me problem solve my ice maker and told me best place to buy the part

Is there ice on the wall?
The main issue in those models is defrost failure. Ice builds up and blocks airflow.
Another huge issue is the relay fails and the compressor stops running. This is the cheapest fix and really what you want. You'll have a quiet compressor that's either cold or very hot to the touch.
Less likely is the thermostat relay or low R134a.
With the model number I can walk you through it. They're are some curveball like if it has a 3 phase inverter or a defrost control relay on board.
But 90 out of 100 the issues I see are defrost failure or bad relay. Today alone i already saw two whirlpools with bad relays one with dirty coils. But in that case your cold but but cold enough.

Replacing a 15 yo old kenmore (whirlpool) for a Hisense wasn't the move i would have made.

To be fair we need more info.
First model number??
Second what is the temperature of each unit?
Cool not cold? Room temp? Cold in one warm in other?
I can tell you how to test it. But really need more info because we are all just saying everything it could be. But can narrow down issues with more info.
Like can you hear the compressor turn on?
That low gutteral hum that starts right after you plug it in. Not the constant air whoosh which is the fan.

Relays and capacitors fail way more often than compressors. A $35 part vs a $450 one.

Fridge ok freezer warming slightly is often an overworked compressor. Clean coils and put on a new relay. I would check frost pattern on evaporator. If it's not over all the coils with frost then it's low on freon. But cool not cold freezer and working fridge usually means compressor is OK. Is not a defrost failure.
Go to the appliance store get a rco410 3n1 relay and replace the relay on your compressor and clean the coils. You'll be out of pocket for less than a 1/3 of a service fee and if it doesn't start working then you know your low on freon which you can't fix can only diy rig. Once they leak a true fix is really hard. You can add 1/4 a can of freon and a tap valve for less than $20 but it may still leak

We bought a Kenmore Elite french door bottom freezer from Sears in 2015. Freezer stopped freezing in 2019. So began a months long process of repeated service calls to get it fixed. The compressor was replaced along with many other parts. A bunch of parts boxes were shipped to my house.
I never fully understood the problem. I don't think the service techs did either. They basically just changed out as many parts as they could.
Has worked ever since. Knock on wood.
