I listen to the Rest is Classified podcast on the regular.

They just did a 2-part series on "How Iran Became America's Enemy". Their guest is Iranian historian Arash Azizi, who is an Iranian-born author and lecturer.

He has good insight into how we got to the point we are now, and where he sees things going beyond the current conflict.

These are YouTube videos of the discussion, but you can also find this podcast in audio-only form if you want to listen to it while you multi-task.

So, what you're telling me is, this didn't start in 1979 -- but, rather 1953?!

All of history starts where it benefits your point of view.

You betcha. It is too bad Eisenhower was talked down by the MSM, who was clearly in bed with the English, from invading then and recovering the interests that had been nationalized. Of course, the English got theirs to our detriment.

Then POTUS Trump comes along and ends the English relationship. The USA will manage it from now on!!

It will be GLORIOUS!!

Interestingly enough, the mullahs supported the 1953 coup, according to Mr. Azizi.

Agreed. It doesn't matter when this started, or even why. What matters is that Iran, supported by two other authoritarian states, has been building a military/militia network that was nearly at the point of being able to control the flow of oil and gas throughout the middle east. Also, Iran, and those same two authoritarian states had the same designs on Venezuela, which has the largest oil reserves outside of the middle east. From a US perspective, those things matter much more than things that happened 50 or 70 or 500 years ago.

The Mullahs were not fans of the secular Mossadegh government that was enacting Democratic reforms and would eventually have worked to overthrow it. The Islamic Revolution was coming no mater what. It was just a question of when.

If you don't think the primary problem is Islamic terrorism, then you can claim 1953. For those who understand the problems with Iran are based on Islamic teachings, then 1979 makes more sense.

It was 1979 when Iran became a state sponsor of terrorism.

Kinda like most wars or soured relationships started long before the final escalation.

Like I've said about the war between the States, the men who set the trajectory for the North and the South were dead and buried before the young men ever took to the battlefield to kill each other.

I thought Iran wasn't our enemy and Trump just bombed them for no reason out of nowhere.

For anyone who has learned their letters, this is a good read on the situation. Much better than some biased podcast:

LoL, No

The Shahs father seized power in 1925
He changed the name to Iran (derived from Aryan, yes the Nazi Aryan) in 1935
The powers that be ran him off in 1941 (due to his flirting with Hitler)
His son took over and built a thriving US friendly Persian nation
A communist was elected Prime minister in 1951 (wait for it)
in 1953 he advocated for the overthrow of the Shah. And also disbanded the Parliament in violation of the 1906 Constitution
He held power for ALL OF 3 DAYS
The Shah had him arrested and jailed for treason. Yes, the CIA helped
He held power until 1979, when Jimmy Carter effed it all up

But the real coup was undermining the Shah in 1953 by the communists

Heres receipts

So your choice in 1953, was either a friendly Shah, or a Cuban type dictator. There was no overthrow of a sitting government

Well, if you want to get technical about it, it goes back to Ismael and Hagar. Or maybe even blame it on Sarah.

I'm sure that's the revisionist history. It's not our place to be running coups in any event.

Why do we get all the blame? The 1953 coup was planned and orchestrated by the Brits. They asked us for help.

It was their oil that Mosadegh stole. He nationalized the infrastructure the Brits built and they wanted their money back.

Peaceful muslims. We should be leaving them alone right?

Is MBS a "peaceful Muslim"? He's a friend of Kushner and Trump.

Ultimately, someone will take power in Iran that we are willing to work with, and I can guarantee you that person will be a Muslim of the Shia variety.
