It's getting ugly between 'breeders' and 'childless cat ladies'

Online, parents and the child-free-by-choice are having heated battles over who's more insensitive.

As more Americans opt out of having kids, the online discourse between parents and those who are choosing to live "child-free" are getting heated.

In 2024, TikTok couple Alex Madison and Jon Bouffard, who had long been known for making content about their “DINK” (that is, dual-income, no kids) lifestyle, posted a viral video announcing that Alex was pregnant. Like most of their posts, the video was a sketch, framed as their “resignation” from the child-free lifestyle — a whimsical DINK administrator told them to say goodbye to all eight hours of sleep, going to the bathroom by themselves and ever going to a party again.

The comments section of their Instagram post filled up with congratulations, laughing emoji and … something darker. People who had loved Madison and Bouffard’s funny, relatable content about being child-free wrote that they would be unfollowing. “Children will ruin your relationship,” one commenter wrote, predicting what pregnancy would do to Madison’s body. “Oh noooooo the weird kid content is starting [sic]. I’ll be unsubscribing,” said another. In response, supportive followers hit back, calling the negative commenters “childfree lunatics” and “kidless narcissist[s].”

In the 4,000 comments, a battle was raging: Parents and people who were child-free by choice, exchanging vitriolic volleys and revealing a cultural rift that extends far beyond one TikTok couple.

Why does anyone care what others choose to do. As long as it doesn't affect me, I don't care.

The world was so much better when every retard with a phone didn’t have the ability to broadcast their opinion and people generally minded their own fricking business.

I have kids. And I know lots of people without kids. If you choose not to have kids, there's nothing wrong with it. Quite honestly, there's times I'm pretty jealous. But there's a little extra to be said about people who don't have them and literally have to tell you about it over and over again. I don't think those people are doing that great. Don't have kids? Good for you. Don't have kids and you have to constantly tell me how great it is not having kids?

If you have to justify it all the time, and it's this huge part of your identity, is it really that great?

Half of these people just post this shite for rage bait. We'd be so much better off if we just ignored them and lived our lives as we see fit based on our own personal experiences.

Congratulations to them... and I'm not surprised their fellow DINKS turned on them.

I feel sorry for DINKS... it's all fun and games until you're 82, your spouse is dead, you have no family and your life consisted simply of earning and spending.. and nary a soul will notice when you're gone.

I think it's a bit reductive to think that a lot of DINKs don't have very meaningful relationships with their siblings, nieces, and nephews. I'm really close to my DINK uncle and aunt, who are getting into their 70s. No, it's not like my mom and dad, but I will be very torn up when they are gone, as will my siblings and cousins.

Having kids is no guarantee that there will be somewhere there for you when you're gone. Especially if you live your life as a shitty person.

Also know folks without kids who are very close to nieces and nephews and will still likely be taken care of in the end. I pretty regularly do things for my Uncle and Aunt despite them not being my parents.

I have a personal bias... have a DINK aunt and uncle who are each 83 and have really turned into cranky curmudgeons. I'll miss them when they're gone... but not terribly so.

I'd wager it's way more than half these days. I feel like most viral things I read these days are completely made up just to drive engagement and people fall for it

It makes it a hell of a lot more likely.

Again, totally depends on your relationship with others in your life.

IMO the variable is less about whether you have kids and more about whether you were a decent person who cultivated healthy relationships in your life.

We have some good DINK friends.

Sometimes, they talk about kids and we talk about freedom, both to make the other feel good about their situations.

I think that’s how people should be.

Same. With that being said I’m not close with any of my friends who didn’t have kids at this point and can’t really relate to my childless coworkers. Not that I don’t like them, there is just very little that’s relatable at this point.
