Daytona Spring Break Panic - no gunshots, it was crushed water bottles

The noise that sparked a massive panic and stampede among spring breakers at Daytona Beach over the weekend was not caused by gunshots, as initially feared, but rather by the sound of people crushing water bottles, the Volusia County Sheriff revealed on Monday. Despite the chaotic scene captured on viral videos, the sheriff confirmed there were zero gunshots on the beach and that 50 deputies were present in the crowd at the time.
Why it matters
The incident highlights the heightened sense of fear and anxiety that can grip large crowds, especially in the aftermath of recent mass shootings. While no one was seriously injured, the stampede demonstrates the potential for tragedy when panic spreads rapidly through a densely packed public space.
The details
According to Sheriff Mike Chitwood, the panic-inducing sound was simply the result of people crushing water bottles, not gunfire. In total, 80 arrests were made over the spring break weekend, and six weapons were seized, but none of them originated from the beach itself. The sheriff noted that in Florida, 'everyone can carry a gun,' which likely contributed to the initial fears. Four separate shootings were reported in the city since Friday, but Chitwood confirmed none of them were the cause of the beach chaos.

Sheriff Chitwood revealed the cause of the panic on Monday, March 16, 2026.

The video I saw definitely sounded like gunshots, and also looked like you could see the plume from the gun just offscreen (assuming it was a current video in the same place, that is).
Or maybe there was a water bottle crushing competition next door to the wet t-shirt one.

We need spring break investment from the community. An understanding by the public that these spring breakers have a lot of stress to unwind would go a long way. Don’t forget the potential of educational outreach to these youth letting them know that gunshots, brawls, and stampedes are bad.

He's got an interesting history.
He's done a nationwide effort to arrest 4chan posters who threatened him online. Some of the arrest vidoes are hilarious.

large group mentality. Someone yelled "GUN" and started running. From that point, it's monkey see, monkey do.

bullshite aside, this joker is pathetic, needing to gin up fears while making plain his disdain for citizens exercising thier rights.

Absolute horeshit here. This fact NEVER entered the mind of anyone on that beach. Those on the beach scattered because they heard gunshots and someone yelled gun.

In all the time I’ve spent in Florida, I’ve never thought a single time that everybody can carry a gun in Florida.

I can guarantee the additional sales tax for the month of March doesn’t even cover a fraction of the overhead.

Back in high school, we used to love to twist water bottles with the cap on until they can't twist anymore. At some point, the bottle would burst open with a large "Pop!" sound. I wouldn't really say that sounds like a gunshot. But if you're in a crowd of 500+, I could certainly see that sound be startling.
Honestly, for a crowd like that, all it takes is someone to yell "he has a gun!" or "they're shooting!". That's enough to cause mass stampede. Even if you didn't hear or see gunshots, if you see a bunch of people running, chances are you aren't sticking around to investigate. You will join in on the running.
