Matt Leinart tells USC to get lost after jersey unretirement request

“When I was at USC, I got my number retired,” Leinart said on his Throwbacks Podcast. “You win the Heisman Trophy, automatic retired number, which is pretty cool. So, our jerseys are hanging in the Coliseum on one side.”
“There’s been multiple times where people at USC have asked me if I would unretire my jersey for some five-star prospect,” Leinart said. “And do you want to know what I told those guys straight up? I said, ‘Absolutely f****** not.’ I am never going to unretire my jersey for some random dude who by the way now could wear No. 11 and transfer after a year.”
Asked what he’d say if a USC player with a big NIL deal offered money for the No. 11 jersey, Leinart said it’s not about money. “Absolutely not. Would never do it,” Leinart said. “It’s not for sale.”

The fact that USC even asked is crazy.

Good for him. That slime ball Riley is likely the one behind this. Shitty way to treat one of your greats

High school kids are so entitled.
and bizarre USC would even ask

It's embarrassing that he was asked.

I wonder which recruit it was

College football will not recover. "BUT OH THE RATINGS ARE SO HIGH."
Yes they are right now. And when they fall off a cliff, there will be no tradition parachute to catch them. That has been burned.

This has the putrid stench of Lincoln Riley all over it.

My gut says this sounds like something Riley and Caleb Williams would request. I know he wore 13 at Oklahoma, but the entitlement definitely fits the bill.

100%
And it’d be embarrassing in any era, but ESPECIALLY in the current era where a dude will take the number, stay at USC for 4 months, then bounce into the portal. frick outta here.

It's really shitty that they would even entertain asking that
It's even more insulting because they haven't won shite since him
And for what, some dude who's only loyal to a little bit more money?

glad he told them to pound sand.
but does he actually have any say so in the matter?
I mean what could he do if USC just said "frick it, we giving this due number 11" other than public backlash?

I think the public backlash would be pretty enormous and not worth destroying the life of the player they gave the number to. They need his permission for sure.

Retiring sports jerseys is dumb

Good for him, it's insane to me that UF still has guys wearing #15 every year

Good. I remember some dipshit playing for the Giants asked LT if he would unretire his jersey number. LT said go frick yourself
