Check out this book. Only 200 pages and $14 on Kindle. Starts around the late 1800's and ends with current events.
Prof. Ansari, 58, is a historian at Scotland’s University of St. Andrews, where he directs the Institute for Iranian Studies.

200 pages on Iran sounds like a cliff

Cliffs:
They were goat frickers living in mud house and nomads until around 1850. Then a Brit discovered oil on their land in the early 1900's. BP paid them pennies on the dollar until they tried to nationalize the oil industry in the early 1950's. CIA and MI6 killed the guy and planted their own guy, but BP started to pay them 50/50 on the profits. Iran got rich and then overthrew their own government in 1979. They nationalized the oil industry for good and have been assholes ever since. End book.

Neat way to say the US/UK engineered a coup of their democratically elected leadership to reinstall dictatorship of the Shah… directly leading to that revolt in 1979.
Shortly after that you’ve got Iran-Contra (where we secretly sell weapons to Iran & use proceeds to fund contra rebels) & then shortly after that the Iran-Iraq war (in which we built up Hussein).
Then there’s the whole JCPOA fiasco + Soleimani + now this.
Don’t get me wrong I don’t care for zealots, but goddamn it’s no wonder they hate us so much over there in the dunes.

Guess you never heard of the Persian Empire? This take is hilariously wrong.

You can’t argue that they weren’t goat frickers because it’s too funny to not be true.

The "primer" was just updated and condensed into two paragraphs by a certain Trump Admin "historian":
"Once upon a time Iran was an ancient Middle East country with a rich heritage. Then oil was discovered in the 20th century -- and plenty of it. Our great oil company people along with Britain then co-opted all operations. In 1953 the US installed the Shah as its great friendly leader. Then in 1979 the Iranians replaced the Shah with their new guy while holding Americans from the US embassy hostage. Everything seemed to be ok for 47 years.
Fast-forward to 2026. Historian in Chief says it's been a "sick, demented and violent regime" with nukes ever since. So now for that reason, Iran's future history is in question because it was decided that it must be bombed back into 5000 BC because our Daddy was ordered to do so by HIS Daddy. 'BAD IRAN!! No nukes for you!'

You left out the part about the USSR taking over part of the country and deposing the Shah's father.

Microwave "History" can sure be contentious, can't it?

Of course. The book is about modern Iran. So, my take is not hilariously wrong. It was not a modernized society until after they received oil money. They were about 150 - 200 years late on the industrial revolution. In the 1800's, they were sophisticated, but by no means had the living standards of modern societies at the time. Hence the sarcastic "goat frickers living in mud huts."

I'm 50 pages into it. Pretty good so far. Discussing when the Shah's father took over and how important the Constitutional Revolution of 1906 was.
It's concise but not choppy, nice to get a quick primer without having to read 500 pages.

Except Mossadegh was not killed. He was arrested, tried for treason served 3 years and then spent the remainder of his life under house arrest.
