ESPN link

quote:

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert told reporters Friday that there is urgency to get a new collective bargaining agreement done by Monday to avoid disruptions to the preseason calendar, including training camp and preseason games.

quote:

The league and union have offered different systems to determine player salaries. The WNBA has proposed that players receive, on average, over 70% of net revenue (revenue after deducting expenses), while the union's last known offer asked for 26% of gross revenue (revenue before expenses) over the lifetime of the agreement. The union previously bristled at the league's proposal to give players less than 15% of gross revenue, while the WNBA has called the union's proposals "unrealistic" and claimed they would result in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.

Commiting a percentage of gross would be a sure fire way to guarantee insolvency for a league that already survived because of welfare. Something tells me the union doesn't have the collective IQ to understand that though.

As clear and example of they don't know that they don't know that I've seen in a while.

A League that hemorrhages money despite being heavily subsidized by the NBA and players demanding money that does not exist.

This is fascinating to watch because it invariably puts a spotlight on the underlying economics, which are brutal for the WNBA players, and ultimately exposes the reality that no amount of virtue signaling will overcome the economics.

Sounds like these ladies are about to be introduced to movie industry accounting.

Shut it all down
See if anyone cares
NBA has wasted enough $
Let them start their own league and run it as they see fit and see if it works

The entire bargaining is nothing more than emotional gaslighting..
A complete shocker being the WNBA…. We all know women are known to lead with logic

This whole thing reminds me of last year at their “all star” weekend when a bunch of them tried to cut in line at some night club. When the bouncers wouldn’t let them in, one of them said “we play in the W”.

Then the guy still wouldn’t let them in.

The WNBA is the professional sports league equivalent of your HR department.

Since they have a history of losing money, how is that built into the contracts?
Half way through the season, the bottom line appears, and if they have lost money, salaries for the second half of the season are reduced proportionately?
I like that idea, I doubt their so-called superstars would understand it, much less approve it.

Published reports claim that the WNBA lost $40 million last year. And that was their best year ever.

However, they have actually lost a hell of a lot more than that. Their television contract is a complete f*cking joke. And I believe that contract constitutes the majority of their revenue. Their television contract is negotiated by the NBA and it’s negotiated in conjunction with the NBA contract. So they’re paid a lot more than anybody would otherwise pay them because you don’t get the NBA contract unless you pay the WNBA an obscene amount out of money for their television contract.

The WNBA is a complete f*cking joke and shouldn’t exist.

The players don’t have leverage like they “think” they do.

This is exactly why all the pandering from the media towards the wnba is a bad thing. These morons have deluded themselves into thinking they deserve a pay raise for a business that has literally never turned a profit.

I don't even think that the league would have to go that far and the players would be paying to play.

The WNBA wouldn't survive a lockout. Not enough people care and the little support it does have will be gone.
