Turkey calls are like anything else. The more you pay, the better they usually sound and perform….and some of that performance is how easily you can make a quality yelp. More expensive pot calls seem to have a larger sweet spot and are less forgiving of bad striker angles.
If you have a box, I would suggest moving to a slate/glass/alluminum pot call. You can yelp, cut and purr on one with a little practice.
And always remember…the mouth call is the greatest turkey conservation tool ever invented.

ESH old hunter walnut and cherry is the best hen cluck I’ve ever heard.

Really like my David Halloran calls. I have a cherry slate and a crystal mistress. I use the slate first thing for some soft tree yelps and clucks and use the crystal as the morning progresses. They seem to really like that crystal pot. I want to say he has a call thats crystal on top and if you flip it you can access the slate sound board for softer stuff.

David Halloran makes some great calls. He's out of tennessee. Lot of good ones similar to his though.

I'd highly recommend getting a really good one first, just so much better. I know they aren't cheap.
Personally though I'd HIGHLY recommend working on that mouth call. I like to practice in the truck on the way to work and what not. Best place and no one can hear you. You can download some tips online and listen to them, I used to have a CD...lol.
Its hands free.
Box calls and slates are great until you get the bird coming and don't want to move. That's where a mouth call is unbeatable, just no movement to use.

I use a David Halloran Crystal Mistress and a Woodhaven slate. I’m not trying to hijack this old thread but I’m curious what everyone is using for locator calls? I was looking at a Phelps Harrison Hooter but wondering if anyone had experience with it or a nice crow or hawk call?

I’ve used an old Faulk’s C50 crow call for the last 40 years. Don’t fix what ain’t broke.

Have had great success with woodhaven and houndstooth. My orginal primos freak is still solid as ever.

I was looking for slate call for a newbie as well.
I landed on the Primos old Betsy. Incredibly easy to use and sounds great.
One of my buddies was shocked that it was only $30 given how it sounded

You don’t have to spend $100 to find a call that will kill a pile of turkeys. Just get one you can afford and practice. I can take almost any old call and unless severely damaged make it play just fine.

I agree…I still kill them with my grandfather’s old box call but I do enjoy the challenge of learning and using new calls. I grew up learning on a box call and then transitioned to a mouth call and then started learning about locator calls and within the last few years started messing around with different pot calls. I enjoy learning the new ones and seeing the results…I get more joy calling them in for my wife or a new turkey hunter then I do for myself.
