How was he a Dem when he was against gun control and for big oil?

This may be hard to imagine in today's environment, but there was a time when there were moderates in both parties.

How were any of those people Dems? Toby's "They'll like us when we win" rant would give a modern democrat PTSD, and he was supposed to be the super liberal of the group.

The Bartlett WH was essentially Sorkin's fetishization of the Clinton administration. Guys like Josh, Sam, and Toby would never be prominent in today's Democratic Party--they are all way too moderate in today's climate.

What everyone else has said, but also, he was from Texas. Would have been hard to ascend in politics in Texas back then if you were pro gun control and anti big oil. Need those groups to fund your campaigns.

My Dad (big Conservative) loved the show, I've watched it on and off and am surprised how often what they say is considered right wing today. Of course there was a time in our lives when Democrats weren't all crazy loons.

He also delivered Texas for the president.

Because the Trump cult is totally sane.

West Wing is great as a political drama in the same way that Sandlot is a great baseball/coming of age movie; it’s a perfect idealized fantasy grounded in just enough reality to allow us all to suspend disbelief and dream for a bit.
The reality of Washington was always closer to House of Cares than West Wing (I believe one of the Clintons even said as much)

I just started a rewatch and the late 90’s democrats are basically republicans today.

Same, probably for the fifth time, half way through season 2 right now.

John Dingell was a pro-gun, NRA board member, WWII veteran Democrat who was still in the House of Representatives until 2015.
The Democrat party wasn't always so monolithic.

I never mentioned Trump but here comes the peanut gallery.

After reading such great reviews of it on this board the wife & I are finally watching it, only 5 episodes in thus far but honestly I'm not getting the allure of it yet.
But the way you compare it to Sandlot seems pretty spot on, especially if it was much better live and doesn't age as well. Or maybe it hasn't fully hit its stride yet.

For many years it was my #1 show of all time. So much so that i have probably seen it all the way through at least 12 times. It was always playing on a loop pretty much. I have not watched it many years, just was sick of real world politics and it kinda poisoned the show for me. I have been thinking of giving it another go, it may be time.

Sorkin wrote that show to be an example of how government "should" work..
When he left the new writer(s) moved toward how the government "actually" worked

I’m not going to try to throw you a pitch.. but keep going.
“18th and Potomac and “Two Cathedrals” are the final two episodes of Season 2. Some of the best television I’ve watched.
Josiah Bartlet is fricking awesome
