The big picture: 9% of CEOs plan to reduce their workforce because of AI investments this year, according to the 2026 KPMG U.S. CEO Outlook Pulse Survey.
55% expect to increase hiring in 2026 as a direct result of AI, while 36% expect no change.
Zoom in: U.S. CEOs are optimistic about the potential of AI to improve their businesses over the next five to 10 years, but in the short run they've been underwhelmed by the impact, KPMG CEO Tim Walsh tells Axios.
"I would say the majority of companies right now are not actually realizing nor can they see the return on investment of the AI they're deploying," he says.
Part of the challenge is the actual integration of AI into existing processes and systems is proving to be sluggish, he adds.
"It takes time to revise process" and make "fundamental changes in how companies have done things for many, many years to be able to benefit from the technologies that exist today," Walsh says.

Short term(10-15) years I do believe it will create jobs. Right now my company is being pushed heavily to produce units to cool the computers at these data centers. Hiring more production employees to meet demand and talking about opening another location. I have a couple friends who got part time gigs training AI.
After AI gets up and running and we have robots that can think and reason is when the guessing game begins and most people go to the classic dystopian sci-fi stuff. There's a reason there are so many sci-fi dystopian novels though. It's not entertaining to read about or watch a successful society with little problems.

Once you remove your panic, AI is not going to drastically change much from a head count.
What it can do is make that head count more productive. Companies have to employ people. Without people making money, how will they buy those companies products. Humans have to work or the whole system crashes. While you will have dipshit companies automate out their workforce, you will see plenty actually expand it.
There is going to be a pivot in job types, but overall numbers will balance out. This will suck for the people who are basically government type employees, those lazy bastards are screwed.
You also have to look at this as a potential solve for our pending workforce crisis. We are not impregnating our America women enough and the TFR is at 1.64. Deaths will outnumber births in 2030. AI will allow a smaller workforce to produce at the same levels, as well as provide social security benefits to the aging population. Another way of driving it home, the USA will not have to rely on migration to bring in working bodies to support the system. One of the driving reasons for the mass migration into US and Europe, we are not producing enough kids to replace the parents.

I just got out of a demo for a legal AI product and that one company said they hired 200 lawyers to refine and train their product.
The fears/hope for mass layoffs and UBI are silly. AI, like the internet, is just a tool. Things will change but there will still be work.

I think the corporate world is starting to learn that while they are slowly increasing in use, modern LLMs are far from intelligence and cannot be depended on for anything more than assisting humans.
That will change one day and the LLMs will evolve into actual AI that can replace humans at scale, but that day is a lot further in the future than what tech bros like to advertise and what executives have been buying into. They are starting to see the reality of it.

The United States employs over 3.5 million truck drivers, which represents about 2.6% of the total full-time workforce of 131.8 million workers. Beyond truck driving, the broader category of transportation and transportation-related occupations employs more than 13.3 million people, accounting for roughly 9.1% of all U.S. workers. That's just the transportation industry.
The biggest difference between a tool and a worker is the boss tells the worker to perform a task, and the worker uses tools to perform the task. The tool cannot perform the task on its own.

Computers are a tool. They generally did not replace workers because the boss cannot tell the computer to perform a task except in the most limited sense of data manipulation.
But what happens to workers when the boss can tell AI to perform the task?

I know 2 things about CEOs of major corps:
1. They will say just about anything to keep stock prices from falling due to uncertainty
2. When they talk about layoffs at all , you can bet your arse they are planning layoffs. “No layoffs” always means “layoffs”

Most here forget that companies want to grow.
With AI I can do what I do today with a smaller footprint.
If I want to get more done, I keep the same foot print, even more done, more people. AI is an enabler.
