Just watch the clip
quote:

NEW: American Nathan Martin wins the closest Los Angeles Marathon in race history, beating Kenya’s Michael Kimani Kamau by just 00.01 seconds. Martin was seen chasing down Kamau at the end of the race. “I made an actual move five miles out… when I saw no one else was picking up the pace. I decided I needed to push,” the 36-year-old said. “At a mile and a half to go, I could see the leader and with 800 meters to go, I was thinking, ‘I’m catching him.’” Martin finished the race with a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, 16.50 seconds.

Insane finish. The Kenyan had no idea he was there.

For everyone's reference that averages just under 12mph for the entire 26.2 miles (11.97mph).

Plenty of people on here probably couldn't hit that on a bike

USA is on an amazing run of kicking other countries' arse in their national sports. First with Canada in ice soccer....now beating Kenya in a marathon

More footage shows the leader was impacted by random people on the course in the last 10th of a mile. Crazy finish for sure.

Yeah, that's only part of the story. leader got impeded and had to stop and do a 30 foot backtrack about 5 minutes before the end. He was following a couple of police motorcycles and one pealed off at the last minute and he followed the one that pealed off. There's video of it. He corrected quickly, but it only took one step!

You rarely see a 100-meter dash decided by 0.01 seconds, and this occurred over 26.2 miles.

Not nearly as bad as this, 5 days ago...at the U.S.A. Track and Field (USATF) Half Marathon Championship.

She was set to win the U.S. women's half marathon. Then a guide car made a wrong turn costing her a spot at the World Championships this Fall.

Jessica McClain wound up coming in ninth despite leading the pack...

McClain was ahead by a wide margin with about 2.4 kilometres to go when she and the other lead runners followed a guide vehicle on a wrong turn, leading them off-course for about one kilometre.

By the time she caught up, she had lost about two minutes and came in ninth, costing her a spot in the World Athletics Road Running Championships this fall and the $20,000 US prize money. The runners who had been following her placed 12th and 13th.

Yeah it is crazy what poor management of a race can lead to.

I am pretty sure they had issues at a marathon in MS a few years ago. It is one of the qualifiers for the Boston Marathon for people in the South who don't want to have to travel to the north to qualify.

They laid out the course 1/4th of a mile or something like that too short and all the people that used it to qualify and had a good enough time for the Boston Marathon had their qualification disallowed. It was a big controversy.

I think the organizers ended up funding some runners entry and travel to another marathon.

Great finish.

The best part is that they run just up the street from me on Sunset. So my walk to Ralph’s will be cleaner than normal for about 3.5 days.

Also, last year, I participated in the marathon for a full city block. My stamina was great, and I slowed zero people down on my way to the gym.

You fellers would have been proud.

I'm not so sure about that. The Kenyan clearly looks back at the 0:03 mark of that clip. He then falls as if he had gotten shot when they reach the finish at 0:23!
