Will this franchise look past Cesar Ruiz and his contract to bench/trade/release him?

No way he should ever see the field in a Saints uniform ever again. I’d rather bring Luke Fortner back and play him at guard while also drafting another interior player or possibly a RT if Fuaga moves inside from the draft.

Glad you started this thread. I’ve been worried about this all offseason. We saw how hard headed the front office was with Peat. Resigning and starting him which kept us from being able to sign guys like Vonn Bell or Trey Hendrickson.

I’m just very afraid the Saints will have a sunk cost fallacy with Ruiz when it’s clear he is not going to work out here. We truly need to move on… the question is will we.

Why does anyone think he has trade value at his salary?

I mentioned last offseason trading McCoy and moving Ruiz to center. I recall him playing better at center than guard. I think we stuck with him this year and can cut him next year.

I can't believe we drafted him to play guard when he had only played center and was dead set on playing center, then extending him was insane. What's left on his deal

I don’t think anyone would give us a ham sandwich for Ruiz. At best, maybe a conditional 6th or 7th based on the fact he’s a former 1st rounder. I just want us to find someone to start over him. I don’t care if we move him to backup center, cut him, trade him, shoot him into space or something else.

To be fair harder to play center than guard.

My issue is we have somehow drafted like absolute arse when it comes to guards since we hit on 2 all pro/hof caliber guys Evans and nicks

To this day I never understood that pick given you had just drafted McCoy. But this pick literally happened because the interior of our OL got destroyed against Minnesota. I vividly remember Sean saying his number 1 goal was to address the OL after that game.

Yeah, and I could really go for a ham sandwich about now.

Ruiz is garbage. Find a guy in the draft and get rid of. He hasn’t been good his entire career in Nola

If by moving on you mean he's cut next year its a good thing. But he will be a Saint next season competing, don't know how hard, for starting RG. I'm 100% certain the team will try their best to find a player he can't beat out.
Best scenario for the Saints is both the new right guard and Ruiz look good in camp and preseason. Then you may have a little trade value even if that means a couple starts for Ruiz.

I think our plan is to sign a LG and draft Ruiz’ replacement in mid rounds this year, but Ruiz will battle w that pick fo the starting job.

What’s interesting about Ruiz is his pass blocking was ok by the numbers.. but his run blocking was horrible and you can’t get the image of him being rag dolled by DTs out of your head

There were games where it looked like he was doing great in pass blocking if he could engage with the defender. The he’d randomly have a guy run right past him

It was the plays where he didn't know who to block that sealed it for me. He wasn't a rookie...or Penning but a vet.

move him to backup

Should never start unless there are multiple injuries. However, I don't think he's tradable, and I don't think we save anything by cutting him. I certainly am not an expert and could be wrong

Also 2020 covid year, scouting and combine was different as well. Seems the bust rates were wildly higher on "house hold names" than in most years.

3rd - Jeff Okudah (CB)
4th - Andrew Thomas (LT)
8th - Isaiah Simmons (MLB)
11th - Mekhi Becton (T)
14th - Javon Kinlaw (DT)

Hindsight being a thing, I wish we ended up taking Brandon Aiyuk, I think we win it all in 2020 if we do.

Manny Sanders was our #2 guy and he was not getting the separation needed. Add in michael thomas' injury and run blocking which Aiyuk would have filled in perfectly for.

Andrew Thomas has been an all pro LT for the Lions, he’s far from a bust and someone the Saints would love to have.

same... and i'll still never understand why they didn't put McCoy at G and Ruiz at C, when it was clear as day Ruiz is better at C, and McCoy, while a good C was a better G than Ruiz is... basically, McCoy is able to play both spots well, Ruiz is not

For he Giants? one season (2022)

I say bust because you'd expect/hope the 4th overall pick to be some surefire, healthy elite LT. Not as injury prone as he's been the past 3 years.

But yes, I can admit I was wrong to call him a bust comparatively to others (okudah)

Have to believe that the front office will be aggressive in FA. There’s a long list of solid starters at the guard position in the open market this year. We have cash to spend and I can’t think of a better way to appropriate.

The difference, optimistically, between the Ruiz and Peat situation was with Peat you had the same coaching staff in place making those decisions. Payton was still here when he got that big contract and kept starting. Then he was only around for another 1-2 years after Payton left, and they still had Pete trying to replicate Payton.

With Ruiz, no one on the current coaching staff had any ties to him before coming here. Therefore, there should not be any loyalty, or trying to save face to force an issue. Only thing that should keep Ruiz here is the timing of when it would make sense to cut him; and him starting should only happen in the event of another Shanle type situation.

Kept trying to upgrade him, but he did just enough to keep his job for a few years
