PSA- Stay clear of Stihl and ACE Hardware

6 weeks ago, a storm came through and knocked down a big oak and blocked my garage. Gas chainsaw I had, was old as dirt, and the electric one just was too small for this job.
I go to my local ACE Hardware and buy a new Stihl saw. Sales guys says if I by the Stihl premix fuel with it, it doubles my warranty. Well, I need fuel anyway so this was a no brainer. Dropped about $600 on everything. After a few pulls, he demonstrates that it works and I'm on my way to get to work. Used it that day, got most it done with just the biggest part of the trunk left. Finish it up the next day. Last weekend, I get the saw out to take care of another tree that is about ready fall. Go to start the saw and ended up with blisters on my hand from pulling the cord so many times. Thought I had to be doing something wrong, so I re-read the manual and pulled up some Youtube videos. Nope. I was doing everything correctly, so I give up and take it back to ACE. They call me a couple of days later and say it's ready to go.
Here's where the shite hits the fan. They call up the guy who sold it all to me and he's also the guy who works on their stuff. Immediately tells me I owe $60. At first, I thought he was making a joke, then realized he was serious. So of course I ask why it wasn't covered under warranty. He tells me that there was water in the fuel and that's what caused all the problems. I look at him like he has lost his mind and say "You mean the fuel you sold me with the saw was bad, broke my new saw, and that's my fault"? You could almost see the cartoon light bulb go on over his head and immediately said he would waive the repair fee. So now I start asking questions about Stihl fuel and it's quality and how I know now to never buy that crap again. He goes on to say that it's good stuff, but might have froze before they got that shipment indoors and stocked on the shelf. That's when I just bit my tongue, grabbed the saw and left. Gas has a freezing point of -40 degrees! We live in Central Alabama! I've still got about a 1/4 of that bottle left. Guess I have some expensive garbage burning fuel now.
I'm going to call Stihl on Monday and see what they say, and make sure my warranty is still intact, because I have no idea what ACE reported back to them.

Was a number of cases a few years ago of people buying those premix cans, replacing with water, returning for refund and the stores restocking them.

Gas left in the saw will go bad over time. If you replace that old gas with new gas, your saw will be much easier to start.

I have an old 025 and a newer MS391, never ran canned fuel except to flush out my pre-mix for storage. Both saws start easily every time on 50:1, Echo RedArmor or Amsoil Saber. I've bought the Stihl oil for the warranty but almost never used it.

Maybe should have worn gloves?

If those metal cans are left outside and not sealed tight, they will get condensate in them. You may want to dump it out and see if it's cloudy or contaminated. It's not anyone's fault, just something to be aware of.

Maybe say stay clear of Stihl gas and the person you have been dealing with.
I can walk out and grab my Stihl chainsaw...dump a bit of new gas in...and it'll crank in about five pulls. It hasn't been cranked in about 2 years and It still will crank.

I always thought it was normal to have to pull about 100 times to get a Stihl going. I love my Farm Boss but it is a bitch to start when it hasn’t run in a week or more.

It’s not the sales guy at ace hardware’s fault the fuel was bad. And the repair guy didn’t know you used gas you bought there he just knew it was bad.
You are wildly overreacting. Just use regular gas now it’s no big deal

You bought some bad gas and had an interaction with one dude who might be an a-hole, so now Stihl products and Ace are crap. Got it.
FYI, I have a Stihl chainsaw purchased in 2005 that still cranks on the first pull. Used it as recent as Christmas to cut a couple trees for firewood. Never measured the oil to fuel mixture in 21 years. Just kinda eveball how much oil I’m adding until it looks the right color. Never done be wrong.

right
Stihl makes the best home chainsaw you can find and every ace hardware I’ve ever encountered has been awesome. OP is way out of line with this

All of this
I dislike the part of our world where one interaction causes a complete meltdown in the time space continuum

Not in a week.

I've let my old farm boss sit so long I've wondered if gas actually goes bad. +1 for a Stihl but I mix my own fuel.

Well, did the fuel in fact have water in it?
Its very possible you put the cap on the can incorrectly and it only takes one night of the right weather for it to get water in it.
You're ultra pissed off about nothing. Get over it.

You can pour fuel in a mason jar (or other clear container) and see if it separates, the water and gas will separate immediately.
Pre mixed fuel is expensive, idk what happened here but there’s no excuse for premix to be bad. It’s usually sealed? And should have a shelf life to guarantee it’s good. I mean it’s like $20/ gallon…it should have some guarantees.
I just found about a 1/5th of a gallon left of pre mix in my garage I forgot about and put it in my pole saw and it fired right up.
ETA: at least 50% of the time with stories like OP’s there’s user error involved to some degree
