HOUSTON — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says he would consider dropping out of the Republican U.S. Senate race — but only if certain conditions are met. The comments come as President Donald Trump prepares to make a highly anticipated endorsement in the closely watched Texas GOP primary runoff.

Paxton made the remarks as Trump weighs whether to support him or incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in the race that will determine the Republican nominee.

Paxton said he would be open to leaving the race if Senate Republicans agree to drop the filibuster and pass the SAVE America Act.

The bill, backed by Trump, would add stricter proof-of-citizenship requirements for voting.

Paxton’s comments come at a pivotal moment in the contest as Republicans await Trump’s endorsement.

This is so sad this has to happen for GOP to pass a bill for voter ID.

Why cant we pass the bill and realize Cornyn is old and needs to retire...

And trust TX to vote for Paxton?

Trump will back Cornyn to get SAVE act passed Thume holding SAVE Act as hostage to get RINO Cornyn re-elected.

At the end of the day Texans won't be able to vote their candidate into office because if they did Cornyn would be finished.

I'm not on Trump's side on this one!!

So Ken Paxton actually cares about the future of the country try more than enriching himself. I know he’s had personal struggles, but that’s kind of impressive for a politician today.

That's an inexpensive price for Cornyn. Let's see if he calls Paxton's bluff.

Why would the GOP go for that?
Letting a man who isnt even in the Senate make demands

The GOP could let him lose and win Talarico's seat back in 6 years

Or he knows his poll numbers vs. Talarico at least right now are looking worse than Cornyn's, and I don't think President Trump wants to have to spend so much time, money and energy fighting to keep that Senate seat in TEXAS red.

Paxton is no less a slimy politician than the rest of them.

Overall, we'd be better off with Paxton in the Senate.
Anyone believing that passing ANOTHER federal law banning illegals from voting will stop blue states from allowing it is naive.

It is a message Paxton must make loud and clear. Make it sound sacrificial and refuse to step down unless it is passed.

John Cornyn must see that this bill is passed if he thinks he stands a chance.

Senate won't pass SAVE under any conditions, IMHO, no matter what he says.

Paxton is trying to act tough when Trump basically declared he didn't think Paxton was a sure thing to win.

This is just Paxton trying to save face and act like he still matters nationally and nothing more. It's really sad, honestly.

If Cornyn is elected he will undermine everything that the Save Act stands for.

This is the equivalent of a hostage situation. They are going to kill the hostage when you put your gun down.

Why would the republicans not pass the Save Act if Cornyn is not the nominee is the real question. 80%+ of their voters are in favor of it.

Same here provided the rumor of Thune holding it hostage. Paxton would win outright IMO and I hope he stays in the race.

I never said anything to the contrary. Paxton does very likely beat Cornyn head to head in a GOP primary, and he SHOULD beat Talarico head to head statewide again.

What I said was that his numbers vs. Talarico are probably showing to be worse than Cornyn's vs. Talarico, and the President may not want to have to spend the effort it may take to guarantee that Talarico doesn't pull off some sort of upset over Paxton.

I don't have to agree with that to be reasoning to force Paxton to drop out, as I do think he'd still win statewide and it's time for Cornyn to retire, but I can certainly understand it from a political and Trump's perspective.

Cornyn is Bill Cassidy. Nobody likes him.

He’s honestly fortunate that the two main dem candidates this cycle is a room temp iq ghetto queen and a weak bitch from Austin.

Paxton would’ve beaten both of those two either way.
