Wokeness, ramping up under the Obama administration has destroyed The Boy Scouts of America.

It started in 2000 when the Boy Scouts of America actually won a lawsuit securing their right to bar membership to gay scouts and scoutmasters. However, many local school districts over the next decade (finishing them off after Obama’s election to the Presidency in 2008), started kicking Scouting groups out of schools because those schools were barred from discriminating against students and faculty on the basis of sexual orientation. The narrative was that because the schools themselves cannot discriminate, neither can they sponsor clubs that actively do so.

With woke administrators kicking them out of public schools, the Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops lost most of their historical meeting spaces and recruiting channels. Then, Obama’s administration stopped allowing Scouts to camp on military bases. This resulted in the Scouting National Jamboree being kicked out of its historical home in Fort A.P. Hill, VA and building an entirely new site on donated land in West Virginia.

His administration then threatened their tax exempt status if they refused to make changes regarding gay scouts and gay scout leaders. Kicking them out of schools pushed scouting to being supported almost exclusively by local churches. Once the orders went down that they had to accept gay scouts and scoutmasters, most Christian organizations were put in a position that they simply could not accept. As a result, many troops and packs sponsored by Baptists and Mormon churches splintered off into their own organizations independent of the BSA.

With the BSA already drowning in sex abuse law suits, in heavy debt from building their new Jamboree home in West Virginia, and having lost a huge percentage of their packs and troops to splinter groups, they were all but forced to start recruiting young women just to stay alive.

The organization today in no way resembles the organization that I was proud to be a part of twenty years ago, but it didn’t naturally change with the times. Scouting was murdered.

I was in scouting when our local schools kicked them out. Thankfully, our local Knights of Columbus took them in. However, the decline was rapid. While my older brother’s troop was filled with kids from all walks of life, including the popular kids at the high school, by the time I was in it, scouting mostly got the misfits. Kids that weren’t athletic enough for sports, smart enough for quizbowl, or socially skilled enough for other activities. If anything, this made scouting even MORE important. It was the after school activity of last resort for the kids who needed guidance on how to be a responsible adult more than anyone. I watched it continue to decline slowly in my time, and then rapidly fall off a cliff in the early-mid 2010’s.
