Crawfish popularity in Texas

Is crawfish now as popular in Texas as it is in Louisiana? Everywhere I go around Houston they have it. Live or boiled. Mexican restaurants, seafood restaurants, BBQ restaurants, sports bars. It’s in way more public places here than I remember in Louisiana.
I’ve seen it being boiled in very large batches at ranches in South Texas as well.

They sometimes skimp people at restaurants with a bunch of tiny crawfish and only a few plump ones because they think people don't know better.

It’s still not as popular as in La. Certainly not for good crawfish that aren’t dusted. But the Texans are coming along. I got my friends hooked on selects and that cast net seasoning.

Here I don’t see dusting I see some butter garlic hot sauce tossed crap. It’s awful! I refuse to eat at a restaurant. I’ll only buy live and boil myself.

I legit laughed at this, but it is also a somewhat true statement.
Companies have left the bayou state or relocated employees to Texas to stay closer to the energy hub of Houston.
There are still some holdouts or Louisiana companies that have major offices in Houston that are sometimes larger than their Louisiana counterparts even if their headquarters are in some one stoplight Louisiana town.

Not up here in the panhandle. At least in my surrounding area. Mexican food is king and steakhouses are second. Shrimp and catfish are the main seafood items you find.

HEB sells more LA spices and boils than Schwegmann’s did. I get the Blue Runner line of red beans, gumbo and jambalaya mixes, Zatarans seasonings, Slap Yo Momma, Blue Plate mayo and more. Crawfish boils are very popular due to the LA transplants.

The last time I was there, I stopped by a place called “LA Crawfish” thinking it was going to be run by a gold ole Louisiana baw. But it was all Asians working, who spoke English as a second language. Half of the menu was Asian noodles, and I think their menu was even translated into Chinese or Vietnamese. I don’t know if they are importing their crawfish from asia or if there are a bunch of Asian crawfish farmers in Louisiana.

Something happens to the availability of crawfish west of I-35. Even in a large city like Austin a city of 2 million plus people it’s not easy to find good crawfish.

I live in the north Houston area and there are probably 50+ locations selling them within 15 miles of me. Some suck, some are the Asian that are hard to get used to, some are HEBs, and some are actually really good.
One of my favorite spots has the loaded with shrimp, sausage, potatoes, onions, and even cheese ravioli that melt in your mouth.
I would guess that Houston has more than most other areas of Texas and maybe even close to the full consumption of Louisiana.

I talked to someone who was selling frozen boiled crawfish. I asked who would want frozen boiled crawfish and he said they go crazy for it in Texas, California and Vegas.

It’s popular, but still sort of in a novelty way. People will eat a half a pound of crawfish or so and enjoy it but then eat a whole actual meal along with it. It’s nothing like here where people will take ten lbs of crawfish to and face and actively remove all other boil ingredients from their plate.
At least that’s how it was a few years ago. I’ve lived here awhile. But my friends back there don’t act like they’re ever going to big crawfish boils or anything

Absolutely not. It’s gained in popularity, but mostly at bars that crawfish boils during the season. There aren’t a ton of folks boiling crawfish at their homes.
