When did society decide dogs in public was acceptable?

Last week, I saw a man walking his pit bull in Wal-Mart. Before that, seen a man walking a pit bull in the Atlanta Airport.
The soccer fields have signs saying no dogs. Obviously don’t want poop on the fields or a dog biting a kid, and there’s a dog park close by. Still people bring dogs out.
Trying to understand why society doesn’t push back. In all reality, animals like the same routine, and lots of outdoor time and 1:1 time with their owner. But what benefit is it for the dog to bring it to a bank or Applebees? Non routine place. Lots of strangers. Opportunity to cause problems.
Keep Fido at home. /rant

I’d rather see dogs everywhere I go, rather than most of the people I see.

I frequent the same bar a lot. Good friends with the owners. They don’t allow dogs which doesn’t bother me.
During Mardi Gras this chick brings in a fricking mini horse looking dog. Big summbitch. He politely asks her to leave. She starts going on and on about how he’s a service dog and she will call the cops. So she leaves. Puts the harness on MrEd and brings him back in with the paperwork. Meanwhile the dog has been licking up on people left and right.
My mind is blown by the entitlement. Dumb fricking bitch came back the following week.

Saw three law abiding citizens with their dog in the mall the last week. Even my 11 year old daughter knew it wasn’t a service dog, but you can’t tell them anything.

Their dog is special and rules don't apply to them or their "fur baby."

Well now you’re seeing those people and their dogs

Its a great opportunity to discipline their dog for them and observe the following bitchy looks you get when their dog decides it likes you more than it's owner.

I don't have any animals, but I do love them. As long as the pup is friendly I like seeing them in random places. And while I say that, I do agree that public businesses aren't the place for them. And yet, I still great the pup and enjoy petting them if the owner says it's OK.

Is your dog's name Fang by chance?

Our Golden Retriever loves to come along with us, but never food type places (unless dog friendly outdoor seating) or anywhere else not okay, and always on a short leash. He just hangs out.

I don’t think it’s the owners’ first motivation, but it is good for the dog. That’s why homeless peoples’ dogs are so chill and generally well behaved.
That said, I don’t like taking my dogs to non normal dog places. It’s a hassle, and most dogs aren’t as well behaved and not-annoying as their owners think they are.

The acceptance of dogs in public places has grown incredibly during my life.
Our weird neighbors had a poodle in the 70's. People would comment, "They let that dog ride in the car with them." People thought it was nuts that they hauled it around to the grocery store, etc.
We had many dogs, but they were yard dogs or for hunting; they never saw the inside of the house or car. A dog box in the back of the truck was as far as they got.
Now, people bring a pit bull to Lowes or fly their Lab with them on vacation.

if you go into a walmart there is at least 2 dogs in there at all times. I saw one a big golden retriever in Target yesterday. I know the staff cant say anything because they are instructed not too.
It is really gross and trashy to bring a dog into a grocery store. The worst is all the old people I see who have their small, white eyed, shaking chihuahua sitting in their carts where the kids usually sit. Animals that you can look at and smell the piss. frickin nauseatin'.
This is another thing that because way more prevalent after covid.

Dogs are better than most people.
I’m fine with dogs being out and about

If a business proclaims itself “pet friendly” (like Tractor Supply) then don’t go there. You’re the problem, not the dog owner.
But if an establishment doesn’t explicitly say as much, I don’t think a pet owner should assume it’s ok to tote their pet along.
And I see no reason to ever bring a pet into a grocery store or place like Home Depot.
