Largest employer in Mississippi, and they’ve been hit with a ransomware attack. Elective procedures canceled. All charting done on paper until this is resolved. Big impact to the university med school. Even the phone system is down.

Haven’t heard about the ransom amount.

Guess there's an opening for a CISO at UMMC now.

Jackson gonna Jackson.

I would imagine it is difficult (spelled i-m-p-o-s-s-i-b-l-e) to recruit first level IT folks to that City.

Happened to all the BR General campuses a couple of years ago. They were only in for a couple of minutes. No ransom was paid.

While it's easy to hate on Jackson, cybercrime and ransom ware attacks are skyrocketing across the country. Major systems across the United States are being hit by very sophisticated attackers.

This isn't a "Jackson gonna Jackson" issue - this is a major, organized crime.

UMMC is such a stupid name, it is commonly referred to as UMC.

Bet they have Veem on premise backups. The ramsomware hackers get to that shite too. I’m amazed at they systems that don’t back up to a secondary cloud solution.

This happened to one of the hospitals I worked at in residency. The rumor was some dipshit family medicine resident clicked on a link in an email and that’s how they got in

It seems to happen more to government agencies, in this case a university system.

This is why I get apoplectic about tards creating a lot of energy around data centers in LA. Electricians are contractors, security guards are contractors, cable dogs are maybe not contractors (but Meta is spending 1billion on data centers in Louisiana, now shite is going to change!) There are six people that are probably company employees that are not temporary taking care of hundreds of racks of virtualized infrastructure on prem.

I posted in another thread that phishing attacks aren't hard to prevent, because shitheads clicking on stuff they shouldn't is a problem as old as the Internet. But they didn't do it. It's not expensive, but they didn't do it.

Yes, but that doesn't roll off the tongue. UMC, University Medical Center does. The University of Mississippi doesn't even uses its own name, it uses Ole Miss instead.
