Can I rent a house in a desirable school district and use it to register my kids in the schools despite residing elsewhere?

Like keep my mortgage on my primary house, rent a house just for the address and use that address for the schools

Yes. But you would be better off buying a small house and leasing it to someone else, but use that address as your residence so you get the school district you want.

Why don't you want to send your kids to Glen Oaks?

We thought about doing this. It didn't sit right with me. I'm just going to pay the money for the LC "elite" private school. Hopefully no riff raff.

I know people who do this and rent the house to a family member for cheap.

Or you can just use that rent money to pay for a private school education.

My thoughts as well. Probably the cheaper option!

I think you don't realize its more common than you assume. I know elected officials do this.. They buy a house in the location of the district they are running in. Depending on the position they have to have been there for certain amount of time.. I think.

But to the person who suggested renting, if the op goes that route, make sure you can 100% do that. Some schools, if it gets reported, will check to see if that child does indeed live in that location.

Short answer: Yes.

At least you could 20 years ago in Livingston Parish. There was an older home down the road from us that was rented by folks out of BR so their kids could attend Live Oak. Seems like they had 3-4 kiddos, all around high school age. They would ghost the place most of the time, but occasionally the kids would have parties out there. If anyone would have done the most cursory examination, they'd have figured out the ruse. OTOH, I guess the property owner paid property taxes, so it wasn't technically illegal.

Maybe so but OP didn't specify where he lives so the natural assumption is LA

Would probably have a hard time finding a house in the hood for less than 1,200 per month. At that point why not just send them to a $14,400 per year private school.

Maybe I’m dumb but it seems like there would only be a very narrow subset of situations where someone financially capable of renting in a markedly better district than they actually live wouldn’t have more efficient options - no?
