One thing I really miss about the old days is a good menswear store

Used to be you could go to a menswear store and for the right price get a couple nice tailored suits and some casual wear. You’d get fitted by some old guy that smelled like the country club bar room who’d shoot the shite with you and get you set up with some clothes you know looked good, fit right, and were top quality.
Seems most of these places died out during COVID. I live in a mid sized city and we literally don’t have one. If you want a suit that’s better quality than men’s wearhouse you’re driving a couple hours. The ones I’ve been to in other towns that are still around seem to be hanging by a thread and don’t have anywhere near the inventory they used to have. You can try to get this stuff on the internet and I’m sure most do now, but it’s not the same. That is one thing I really miss about the old days.

Everyone's too obese and trashy to need a menswear store these days. The dress code for most weddings is "good jeans" and Heydudes

Custom fit suits were never an every man thing. You just have to drive further and pay even more now.

If only someone knew the difference between knew and new.
Same old grammar problems, nothing new.

Brother there are at least 4 of these stores in Baton Rouge. They are doing well.

Great men's stores faded away long before COVID. Guys used to buy as many as 4 new suits a year. Now they might buy 1 suit every 4 years. Those suits had enough profit in them to support the salesman well and cover the store's substantial overhead. If you want to experience a hint of old times shop at Harper's in Baton Rouge.

People that know their exact measurements can actually get really nice stuff online for a good price on eBay, Poshmark, etc.

Maybe not custom made, but there were definitely experienced tailors everywhere. It was very easy to get a suit altered, at least.
BR still has a number of good tailors, so at least there's that.

There was one in Franklin when I was growing up.

This would be the list!
And RIP to Mr. Frank. Glad the store and his legacy continues. Great American patriot.

The slow death of the suit and the outside stresses of running a tailor shop forced a rapid decline of these businesses. Yes, Covid didn't help at all either.
There are a couple things that have happened in this space. First the middle of the market is basically gone. The old guy that smelled like the country club mens grill retired and there was no apprentice to take their place. The supply chain issues during covid killed their model where they could get material at decent prices at the scale in which they purchase it. In the end what we have is tailors and bespoke suit makers that have gone significantly upmarket, because the prices that you now have to charge to have a successful business basically meaning your now only serving the upper market. The other end of that is the massive discount places like Mens Warehouse serving everything else. The middle of the market doesn't exist.
Luckily, in Raleigh there are several custom clothiers that aren't overly expensive. I don't have to wear suits much these days, but when I do, I like them to fit well and have somewhat unique finishes. But I can imagine many cities have lost these types of shops.
