Speed Bumps

Should be illegal. I have yet to meet anyone that’s ever lived in an apt complex or just in a neighborhood that’s said “Thank goodness for these speed bumps”…
How do these things even get by zoning laws?
They do more damage to cars thru wear and tear than any “safety” they provide.
Not to mention property values. I’m never buying a house in a neighborhood that has speed bumps. Why would you wanna drive over that stuff everyday to work?

I don’t know why they call them speed bumps. If anything they slow you down.

It's the HOAs that vote to spend dues on it.
I am not opposed to them in residential neighborhoods if there are folks constantly speeding...
People have kids out here playing in the streets...

In my old neighborhood, we had big riff in speed bumps vs stop signs and which the HOA was going to install.
The neighborhood had long straightaways that people would speed down. It was a problem and something needed to be done. One of the guys ended up posting a bunch of articles from the DOTD about how stop signs are ineffective for that issue and in fact can be more dangerous due to the perceived safety/stopping.
The HOA was too scared of “liability” issues of the speed bumps (actually humps, the larger ones) and decided to install the stop signs.
They have a place. But I do agree the small, sharp ones are pretty annoying.

But that’s the thing. How hard is it to stay out of the road? A pedestrian should not be in the road. Period. And these speed bumps aren’t preventing cars from going 50, they are preventing cars from even getting up to 30.
You shouldn’t need a speed bump to prevent accidents. Just stay out of the road. Any parent that lets their kids play in the street is an idiot. You can’t legislate safety for idiots

Had them in the condo complex I lived in during college. It was a one way in, one way out complex, and they were the small, sharp ones that were bolted into the cement. I had to drive over 3 or 4 sets to get to my place, it was annoying as hell. One night, my roommates and I had a few beers and decided to take an impact driver I had and remove them. Was a pretty quick quality of life upgrade, they never replaced them while I was there.

As soon as I enter a neighborhood with speed bumps, I know it will be filled with the poors.

I went down this rabbit hole a number of years ago … it turned out that any studies actually done on them showed that they were, at best, a wash when it comes to reducing deaths, but most likely actually increased deaths.
Main problem is that all first responders have to slow down for the damned things. They have to slow down more than the average car/truck and that increases response time. There’s also a psychological issue in that humans get complacent … drivers don’t slow down for pedestrians, they just speed up in between bumps, and pedestrians assume that vehicles are slowing for them so they walk in front of vehicles more when speed bumps are present.
Texas funded a study on them and it ultimately suggested that they be banned in the state - the legislature didn’t go with it. In the late nineties the head of the EMS workers union wrote an open letter urging them to be removed nationwide.

I've heard them called "road humps" before

I just put these out. Also every morning I go park my truck on the street which blocks roughly half of it so people are forced to slow down.
Believe it or not I had a neighbor do this years ago regularly. He was the most hated guy there and got f’ed with routinely. How bout your kids play in your backyard or maybe just not buy a house on the main entry/pass thru street in the city?

For small children…extremely difficult

They serve the purpose of slowing cars down in areas with lots of people, generally kids. Very simple logic

Well to start, regardless of your opinion if a pedestrian is in the road they have the right of way. You can’t just hit them.
Also, you’re talking about kids. They don’t have fully developed brains. They are going to frick up. They are going to do dumb things when they play. That’s part of it. The consequence is they get hit?

Jackasses are everywhere, especially in parking garages.
I actually install some bump/humps. Not cheap to have good ones installed and most just get ripped out of the pavement by the speeding vehicles or larger delivery trucks.

I find that hitting a speed bump, sleeping policeman, speed hump, whatever term you call them, at about double the posted speed limit is far more pleasant than going over them slowly. I drive a GMC 3500HD longbed crew cab truck....if I ease over speed breakers it is a bone jarring and gruesome experience....if I hit them at about 40 MPH or greater my truck front tires bounce once and most of the time the back tires never hit the speed hump....I just jump over it.....if the back wheels do make contact they are just barely making contact and have more than enough travel in the suspension to never even shake the truck. It works even better in my commuter...its a subcompact and the wheel base is so short it definitely is air born when I go over speed humps...barely even notice them. Slowing down for them is a mistake....it will knock the fillings out of your teeth...but hitting them around 40-50MPH makes them almost unnoticeable....
