Record number of LSU applicants, most from out of state

In the past decade, the number of students applying to LSU has nearly tripled — and the number of applicants from out of state has soared.
Over 62,000 potential incoming freshmen have applied this cycle, university officials say, compared to 18,122 in 2016.
While the pool of applicants swells, so does the proportion of out-of-state students interested in becoming Tigers. A staggering 82% of applications came from non-Louisiana residents, up from 49% in 2017.
“That is a trend across all institution types, whether it’s a regional, public or a flagship, even private institutions, seeing more students choose to come to the southeast than ever before,” LSU Vice President for Enrollment Management Emmett Brown said. “This region, in general, is growing. We happen to both be the type of institution that’s grown the most but also in a region that’s in demand.”
Officials say LSU benefits from a confluence of factors, which might help it head off the dreaded “demographic cliff” that is worrying other universities as the number of high school graduates in the U.S. ebbs due to population decline.
The appeal of the SEC, the university's resources as a flagship institution and a vibrant student experience attract the “best and brightest” from Louisiana and other states, they said.
“If they’re not from the state or from the region, they see us on ESPN on a Saturday night,” Brown said. “There’s some of that big brand piece that exists there. But then they turn around and they see that we have hundreds of student organizations, they see that we have phenomenal leadership preparation with our student government, with our Greek life.”

Ridiculous. I’ve had one graduate from LSU, and I have two there now. I can’t believe they spew this shite.

This would be because people from LA have fled their shithole of a state, but like liberals forget why they left that shithole and send their kids there to repeat those mistakes.

This isn’t a Louisiana or LSU trend. It’s a consequence of woke educational policies in the Northeast following COVID. Northern students like the relative freedom and lack of DEI policies at SEC schools. They want to have normal college experiences like their parents had in the 80s and 90s and don’t want to deal with Free, Free, Palestine protests or transgender everything.

I commented in a previous thread less than a year ago, in response to someone saying anyone paying $40k/yr for their kid to go to LSU out of state was a retard. I stated that Texas schools are no longer admitting Texas students and that we are all coming for LSU's spots and have money to pay out of state fees. Same is happening with OU as well. I was totally dog piled.
I've got three kids in the middle of applying for or just graduating from college. I'm telling you UT and A&M are not options for even a 4.0 student anymore. (side bar: reviewing admission standards from the 2025 class at my daughter's prep school just last week with her counselor, there was a student with 4.86 GPA with a 1560 SAT that was denied admission at UT)
LSU's admissions committee is going to have some tough decisions this year and in the future.. do they admit the kid from Texas with $$$ or do they try to educated their own residents for free.

Yes all SEC schools are attracting kids from NorthEast now. Avoiding the woke, college athletics the weather and price are all factors. It may have been messy but the new LSU president was a good choice and will improve the entire LSU system

What’s the racial demographic of applicants

This explains some of it. SEC schools are more popular now in response to a cultural shift. And also, buckets of government backed loans being thrown at students (many of whom don't even graduate or get worthless degrees) that compete with private dollars for the same seat in class. And LSU's proximity to TEXAS, which has grown at insane rates and all levels of education have not caught up to demand.

I’m honestly surprised by the number of kids still wanting to attend college. For well over a decade now so many people have said college isn’t worth it anymore and that it’s way overrated and overpriced. I really don’t know what to believe anymore.

My gut says this reflects poorly upon the state of LA education.

Those kids from up north just wanna scream “suck that tiger dick bitch” and be inundated with all the culture

Some of it is cost for private schools vs public schools. LSU is much less expensive even with out of state tuition. Baton Rouge is not an expensive city either.
