WASHINGTON — The family of the late LSU football legend Billy Cannon didn’t ask for it, but they’re delighted that President Donald Trump pardoned him for his 1980s counterfeiting conviction.

His daughter, Bunnie Cannon, said the White House phone call came out of the blue Thursday night. “My mom and sisters and brother were ecstatic,” Cannon said. Her mother and four siblings were aware that some friends had reached out to the White House, she said, but the family had never asked for a pardon.

“We never thought it would ever come to fruition. So, none of us pursued it," said Bunnie Cannon, acting as the family's spokesperson. “I just think he would be thrilled that he got this clemency because in his mind and in our mind, people saw him beyond the counterfeiting.”

Once the official certificate arrives, Cannon said, she’ll have it framed for her mother, Dorothy “Dot” Dupuy Cannon, who had been by Billy’s side since both attended Baton Rouge’s Istrouma High School in the mid-1950s. They married while both were freshmen attending LSU.

Not Poli Board but someone will make this about Trump. Can we keep this about Cannon and LSU?

My groceries just dropped in price! That was so fast! Who knew pardoning dead people would help us all so much.

He is not in prison, he died in 2018. How is this magic possible?

Posthumous pardons are not unusual.

He was born in Philadelphia MS. Prolly would have ended up at OM if his paw paw hadn't moved to BR to work in the plants during WWII

I grew up only seeing the punt return pic, and never knew what he looked like. Then a few years ago I saw his hawk-like visage:

And learned he was from Philadelphia, right by the Choctaw Indian Reservation

Does the pardon cover only the counterfeiting? Oe does it also cover the "qu--rbaiting"* he and his Istrouma friends did? (I once met a lady who went to Isttrouma w/him. She said he was an a-hole juvenile delinquent)

Allegedly he and his gang were caught qbing and a deal was made -- BC would be let off if he went to LSU instead of TA&M (where Bear Bryant was) as he intended

*Hanging around a public park and waiting for a f@g to come along and try to pick one of them up. Then the others would come out of the bushes and threaten to call the cops/f@g's wife unless he gave them all the cash he had on them.

I once met a guy who claimed he and his HS friends did this in the late '60s -- though he insisted they only did it to humiliate the f@g, and denied shaking them down for money.

Thanks, OP! I hadn't seen it, and wondered why The Hayride was sharing an old Billy Cannon article as if something had happened today.

I hadn’t seen it either. I got murdered in the downvotes so I guess I have learned my lesson.

Dunno. Seems to mean something to his family.

Crazy that things like this still occur today, but in a digital form.
