A little good news: IBM will triple hiring

They've made a conscious decision to buck the current trend of "AI instead of humans" and they're hiring more people anyway. Interesting decision.

(Bloomberg) -- International Business Machines Corp. said it will triple entry-level hiring in the US in 2026, even as artificial intelligence appears to be weighing on broader demand for early-career workers.
While the company declined to disclose specific hiring figures, it said the expansion will be “across the board,” affecting a wide range of departments.
“And yes, it’s for all these jobs that we’re being told AI can do,” said Nickle LaMoreaux, IBM’s chief human resources officer, speaking at a conference this week in New York.
LaMoreaux said she overhauled entry-level job descriptions for software developers and other roles to make the case internally for the recruitment push.
“The entry-level jobs that you had two to three years ago, AI can do most of them,” she said at Charter’s Leading With AI Summit. “So, if you’re going to convince your business leaders that you need to make this investment, then you need to be able to show the real value these individuals can bring now. And that has to be through totally different jobs.”
The result is a different mix of duties for early-career workers at IBM. Since AI tools can handle most routine coding tasks, the company’s junior software developers now spend less time on that and more time working with customers. In the HR department, entry-level staffers now spend time intervening when HR chatbots fall short, correcting output and talking to managers as needed, rather than fielding every question themselves.

Good news to see companies taking a view of AI being a tool to improve quality of work. Hopefully others come around to this as well.

IBM got a big tax break to open an office in BR sone years back provided they hired a certain amount of ‘good paying’ jobs.
It was a call center.

Means nothing if they only hire imported dot heads

On what planet can you show up to interview potential employees in pajama pants?

I can't imagine your typical entry level socially awkward computer nerd excelling at this job.

You sure don’t hear about it much these days do you? Remember it was going to be a ‘game changer’ for BR?

Maybe he went to the wrong place and thought he was going to the office of porn names and subjecting himself for a photo shoot and needed easy access to drop his pants.

That’s because they could never meet the minimum hiring requirements necessary to meet the tax incentives they received despite years of extensions.
It was bon marche that was the huge call center that was supposed to be an economic boon, and quickly left town after the tax credits cleared.
Nonetheless, both exhibit how to waste taxpayer money in the name of job creation only.

IBM? The company uniquely poised to have been Microsoft?
Except why?
Eastman Kodak and Sears are on lines two and three.

More companies will follow suit, you can't stop hitting entry level and cut off development of employees.
Our company started back last year as most of the AI promises has fallen short

Someone should cross reference this IBM's H1B applications. I'll bet they are pretty similar

We’ll see how this works out. The younger generation in the US haven’t had the opportunities to develop in the last 10 years. It’s hurt our ability to find good mid level talent now too.
Maybe this changes. But IBM is probably going with H1B’s for this.

This coincided with the growth of downtown BR around 2007-2014. Since 2014 or so downtown BR has been rather stagnant when it comes to growth.

There are 1660 software development jobs posted at IBM, nearly all of them are in India. They are only showing about 5k open jobs across all divisions, and as I've sampled them, 85% are not in the US.

Is that pajama boy an applicant or employee of IBM?
