My annual Godfather watch is underway. Something just hit me. Why in the world would Appolonia’s father allow her to marry Michael. I mean he basically told him he was a gangster. Hmmm.

Because he sensed Michael was wealthy , important and powerful. Also, Michael surprisingly showed respect by getting the father's permission to court his daughter " under the supervision of his family".

You walk around with security means you’re someone important.

He explained that Appolonia would lose a father instead of gaining a husband if he refused to consent. Pretty clear.

Think about it. He's an American important enough to be housed and guarded by an Italian Mafia family so you should automatically know he's connected in a big way.

The father owns a small village cafe and likely struggles to make a modest living. He's seeing power, influence and wealth for his daughter's future-----and those dagos are very family oriented, so things may change for them too if the daughter marries into the mob.

He wasn't telling him to let me court your daughter or else. That's a total misread, if that's what you're saying. He told him a lot of people would pay to know who he is, then she'd lose a father, etc.

Why did the buttonmen who jumped Frankie Five Angels say "Michael Corleone says hello" when the intent was to kill him?

That line was ad libbed and the director and producer decided to keep it.

That line was ad libbed [by Danny Aiello, so he would have a line of dialogue and get noticed/paid more] and the director and producer [Coppola was both] decided to keep it, [even though it makes no sense]

I always thought they were trying to pin it on Michael for anyone who heard.

And Frankie survives, thinking MIchael ordered a hit on him. It works out, whether the line was ad libbed or not. That's why Frankie decides to testify, until they show him they can get to his family even back in Sicily, and Tom gives him the talk about Roman honor.

*at least, that's the way I remember it. Haven't watched in a while.

Danny Aiello didn’t have a line so he blurted that out to get a movie credit. Most directors would’ve fired him.

How did 9 year old Vito get away from Don Ciccio’s henchmen?

He had like a 20 yard head start
Any grown Man under 300 pounds with two functional legs would have caught him in less than 30 seconds

the threat he issued wasn't to court his daughter.
but the threat of knowing Michael could take him out probably DID play into the father's thought process.
