Lindsey Vonn has had yet another surgery on her fractured leg.

The American skiing icon revealed the news Wednesday, three days after her devastating crash in the downhill at the 2026 Winter Olympics that dashed her hopes of grabbing a medal while competing with a torn ACL.

“I had my 3rd surgery today and it was successful,” Vonn wrote in an Instagram post that featured a photo of her in a hospital bed. “Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago. I’m making progress and while it is slow, I know I’ll be ok.

“Thankful for all of the incredible medical staff, friends, family, who have been by my side and the beautiful outpouring of love and support from people around the world. Also, huge congrats to my teammates and all of the Team USA athletes who are out there inspiring me and giving me something to cheer for.”

Vonn, 41, tore her ACL during a ski crash in Switzerland roughly a week before the start of the Milan Cortina Games.

She crashed into a gate during her first Olympics run and had to be airlifted to a hospital.

Hate that she had the crash (she was definitely going as hard as she could to get off line and hook the gate). But I don't know anyone who could question her toughness and drive at his point.

Man, what a rough few days, but she deserves all the props for giving it her all. Hope she recovers well.

Agreed. The only thing I question is her judgment. But so long as that judgment is only hurting herself and not others, I'm completely okay with her.

I don't. She had a ton of professionals around her helping her make that decision, testing her knee, and assisting with being able to compete. She got injured on something that didn't have to do with the ACL injury (and she's known for pushing the envelope).

Doesn't say in the link, but I assume her orthopedic surgeons from the US flew there to facilitate? Thats one hell of a trelis BTW. Could grow some climbing roses up her leg very nicely.

This Reuter's article addresses that a bit. The hospital that she's at is pretty well-renowned in the region for their quality of care. Given the extent of the injury, they're were more worried about blood flow and nerve damage I imagine.

quote:

Vonn, who said in an Instagram message on Monday that she had suffered a complex tibial fracture - had two surgical procedures in Treviso, one to stabilise the fracture and another to prevent complications linked to swelling and blood flow, a source close to the matter said.
After initial assessments at the Codivilla Hospital in Cortina, the U.S. team chose to transfer her to the only hospital in Treviso, also considering other facilities such as Milan and Innsbruck in Austria, the source added.

quote:

The Ca' Foncello hospital is one of the two Olympic hospitals along with Milan's Niguarda. It is close to Cortina and is equipped with a state-of-the-art neurosurgery unit.
In this department - which has 28 beds and 10 dedicated intensive-care beds - doctors perform around 1,500–1,600 operations a year for brain and nervous system diseases and trauma.
At Ca' Foncello Hospital - whose origins date back to the 13th century - neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, orthopedists, physiatrists and physiotherapists work side by side on each case, the hospital said in a statement on Tuesday.
"It is like an orchestra where each musician is a top-level soloist, but it is the harmony of the group that produces the best result for the patient," it added.

Prayers for no post-surgical complications. Was her leg fracture diagnosis ever confirmed? As someone who deals with broken bones and orthopedic surgeons daily, it appears that LV may have suffered a communicated fracture with titanium hardware and an external fixation device. Quite possibly, she may be wearing that external fixation device for 4-8+ months, depending on the healing progress. 1 year until full recovery with aggressive physical therapy. Her tibia will never be the same, as weather will affect her future leg pain. Wishing her the best.

What's crazy is that looking at her laying on the ground, you'd never know it was broken that bad. No leg flop, or other stuff like you see in football.

Skiing accident produce some of the nastiest leg injury’s I know.

between then and a buddy who got hit by a truck walking home one night.

Then you should know it is called a comminuted fracture you are referencing, not communicated.

First, I hate that for Vonn. She is a great competitor.

Second, ugly hospital gowns appear to be universal.

Third, I can't even grasp how miserable she must be with that contraption on.

Looks like a possible fasciotomy incision under the bottom part of that bed sheet. Probably had compartment syndrome to go along with the complex tibia fracture.

I saw what looks like an open wound, is that what you're talking about? That's crazy

I believe we can chalk that one up to autocorrect, don't you think? You know, instead of being an a-hole.

I had to have external fixation on a Trimalleolar Fracture for my ankle. She will have another operation or more for internal fixation in 10 days to two weeks if the swelling goes down enough.

When you have external fixation you know had a break so bad they can't set the bones.
