The conflicting signals of economic news makes your head spin.

Earlier this week is was announced that December holiday sales were flat despite reports during the holidays of robust spending and high foot/web traffic.
Now the employment data was expected to be extremely low and we get a number double expectations. And unemployment ticks down.
But they also said there were actually 900K fewer jobs in 2025 than previously reported.
Every time you turn around there is conflicting news on the state of the consumer and the economy.

This is on purpose, you're supposed to let the talking heads tell you what to think.

After 2020, I’m amazed that anyone believes any number generated by any gov’t agency.

I'm here too.
I don't care who's in charge, I don't trust them.

And any politician as well, for that matter.

I usually base my assessment of the economy on personal experience. Seems like things are kind of ticking along about like they normally do. shite goes up, shite goes down. People lose jobs. People get jobs. Businesses close, businesses open. I will say that out of necessity I keep up with skilled building tradesmen availability and that can be an early indicator of impending economic downturns....construction is one of the first to get hit and recover....and those numbers are pretty similar to what they have been over the last 20 years or so. If you have a job and your salary makes your nut you are probably of the opinion the economy is fine. If not you are probably of the opposite opinion. If you ain't trying to time markets and make a fortune gambling somewhere in the middle is where the truth lies, most likely. If one place is saying the sky is falling and another says the sky is expanding and secure the truth is probably that the sky is just the sky.

All the numbers are cooked.
They were cooked under Biden, they are cooked under Trump. And they were cooked long before both of them.

Any numbers the gov gives you, it probably worse. Our economy is made of paper pushers.

Pretty well said. It seems like a lot of the bragging and complaining come from politically leaning people. Based on whoever the president is, their political bias drives your opinion of the market.
Personally, I don't credit the government with my job and I don't blame the government when life hits me. If you want to act like the government is to blame, you lack accountability and are looking for an excuse. I've not had the government affect my career path and I started working under the HW first administration.
The most successful people I know spend 0 time coming up with excuses. They find a way.
I just wish the government would take less of my money. I work a little more than a day out of the week for the government.

I'm confident that unemployment number doesn't include kids like mine who graduated with bachelor's but haven't found a job.

You will know what they want you to know.

The easiest way to evaluate is if you’re better off than before. Yes you could have gotten a raise etc but when you go out to dinner with your family and pay the check, do you feel it?
Stocks going up being an indicator is dumb. Most people don’t even own stocks and if they do, don’t cash them out.

How long have they gone without working?

87% of households with 100k+ income own stocks. Not going to say it's dumb not to invest in stocks because there are plenty of people bad at it, but you just do a really bad job at pretending to be wealthy online.

This is such a dumb stat. 100% of people making 100mil a year are millionaires.
Median income is under 100k so most people don’t own stocks.
It’s baffling how dumb some of you are. Like copy and paste with no thought behind it

All by design, exactly the same as the political 2 party divide DC relies on to infect our population with heated/hated debate. With more access to "data and information ", which as you say is a legit manipulation and truth shitshow, the people have every opportunity to "nuh-uh, you're so wrong, Man. Here's a tweet" each other to death. And the politicians at state and national level sit back, take a deep breath and fist bump that they're able to pull off the magic trick for another election season.
