Rifle scope

Need help choosing a scope. All of my scopes have been cheaper or hand-me-downs. It's going on a .308 for whitetail. Normal 150-250 yards for deer, would like to go to the range and push pass that.
Would like to stay under $1200. If it's a noticeably better product, I can increase that. Not sure that I even need to go that high on price.
P.S. I know at 250 yards I don't NEED a better scope.... I want it.

Trijicon Huron, think they can still be had for around $500. It's the most impressive bang for the buck rifle scope I have seen, and I've been more impressed with it than plenty scopes I have that cost 3x. Great sight picture, eye relief and as good of low light glass as anything else I have used in much higher price ranges.

Trijicon or Nightforce. They are 100% trust worthy.
Leupold VX line is not good quality at all and I own one. The Mark 5s might be but if you want bulletproof, the 2 above.
Best glass is Swarovski but they are fragile. I know because I own one I paid $3k for. I'm getting Nightforce in a few months. I know they weigh 10lb but I want a scope I can trust. Don't care about warranty.

no experience with NF, but have Zeiss and Leupolds on all my rifles and they are accurate and durable. Will continue to use these.

I have VX-3s on almost all of my rifles. 40mm objectives for the most part with max 10x. They do everything I need them to do and I can see clearly during legal shooting hours. A friend of mine runs VX-3 also and said the last NF he shot didn’t seem as clear as his Leupold. He shoots a lot of different guns zeroing them for a local gun store.
I recently purchased a VX-5 but I haven’t used it yet. My reason behind purchasing was because I had extra money to burn and figured why not make the next step up. I got a gen 2 for $1,050 but the gen 1 can be had for around the $750 range. I bought that just after buying a VX-3 3.5-10x40 for $355… couldn’t pass it up at that price.

Nightforce has clear glass but you have to get the top tiers. Not SHV.
You can have the clearest glass like I have and if it's not reliable, then nothing else matters. Leupold today has QC issues and is known for subpar reliability. They don't make them like they used to.

I don’t know where you get your information from but I’ve got over a dozen Leupold and no reliability issues with them. I haven’t dropped all of them but I don’t make it a habit either. I will say that one of my more recent scopes was dropped just prior to shooting my last deer at 300 yards, so I think it’s perfectly adequate for the average whitetail hunter. Just because someone is ready to spend $1,000 on a scope doesn’t mean they need to.

I haven't had any issues with mine but I've seen posts on the sniper's hide type forums where folks are complaining. I'll try to find it but there was a review on the mark 4 where the guy put it through a standardized durability/reliability test and it performed poorly.
ETA: are the reliability issues a recent thing? I have a Redfield on my 444 from when they were still made by Leupold. My pull up rope broke and it fell about 25 ft. The POI was off by about 2" at 100 yds when I checked it.

Don't let that rifle hit the ground. That's what I'm talking about. If you pay money to go on an elk hunt, or set your rifle against a tree to piss and it falls, and that rifle hits the ground, you most likely aren't hitting where you are aiming. Why take that chance?
He wants a good scope he can trust . Leupold is not it.

I dropped my 20 yr old VX2 4-12 twice on the same weekend this year, checked it to make sure it was still on, and then dropped a deer at 230.
Leupolds are the best value out there. JMO of course

I've heard of problems tracking zero with the elevation turrets when dialing distance.

You’re saying that someone should spend 2 to 3 times the amount of money to get something “they can trust”… For whitetail hunting…. That’s ridiculous.
I don’t care what kind of scope I have, if it takes a hit, I’m going to check zero at the next opportunity. Sometimes that’s not possible, as I mentioned, my last drop was shortly followed by a perfect 300 yard shot with a Leupold.
The guy is asking for advice on a new scope. The internet has a tendency to recommend the best or the best “bombproof” bullshite that is completely unnecessary in a lot of cases.
If you want to say that Leupold is susceptible to losing zero after being dropped, go right ahead, but calling them low quality is not an accurate statement.
