re: New to deer hunting and will be on public land. Best mobile stand set up to get up a tree
Posted by CaptJJ on 11/16/25 at 7:01 pm to GravelLotinCanada
I hunted a saddle for 8 years and in thr last two years I've switched to a light weight lock on set up, and I'm preferring it. I started with and XOP then went to the lone wolf .5. Not sure what type of terrain you hunt. Where I am, it's river bottom swamp, a lot of big timber but very low canopy. I'm gravitating towards hunting much lower in the tree with the mobile lock on. For the area I hunt, I just always had trouble finding a tree that I wasn't silhouetted in, or having to get too high where I was in thr canopy and loosing visibility. I find the better mobile lock on and the saddle to both be about the same as far as ease of set up. For me, I can remain more still and sit longer in the lock on vs the saddle.
This is all for bow season. When gun comes in, on thr public land I hunt I hunt from the ground. In my pack I carry just a folding type dove seat and some of the old army surplus type camo webbing and just make impromptu ground blinds in areas that I want to hunt. Can be more mobile than way, and in the area I hunt I can see farther from the ground vs a tree.
If your hunting plantation pines, I still think climbing stands have there place too.

Yep, same problem I've been having.

Same thing I've witnessed this year in south ms, both the white oaks and the swamp chestnut oaks, best crop I have seen in years.
Look at SKB, they are great quality over and unders for the price.
100% agree

quote:
you can have your suboptimal hunting ground and good pig hunting. Frick a pig and anybody who advocates for their existence and sport hunting.
The fact I got told F you over my comment is why I seldom every comment on anything, and why I don't have social media. I'm not advocating at all for or against hogs either way. They exist on this landscape and have for as long as my European ancestors have, and I enjoy hunting them. One thing you are 100% correct on, my hunting land is suboptimal. 100 acers of cutover briar patch and willow thickets, half of which floods from the pearl river. With all the king's gold it would never be some whitetail haven. But I live on it and hunt it and the public land that surrounds me hard and get to watch all the wildlife and impacts they have daily.
I don't doubt for one second hogs destroy crops. I know they do and have witnessed it firsthand many times. The point I meant to get across that perhaps I didn't articulate well is that the crop they are tearing up has already in and off its self-caused tons of impacts to native wildlife. An entire 16th section that has been nuked with roundup to kill every native plant, the gorund knifed in to kill every small native rodent and then planted in a GMO nonnative soy bean or corn isn't a healthy representation of a native environment, even if it might well help grow big whitetail antlers.
I've hunted in Iowa, norther MO and western NE for a couple of decades now. No hogs to be found. 10 to 15 years ago we use to hunt a ton of farmland just on permission alone, before leasing was even a thing up there. Every famer that ever gave us permission to hunt hated whitetail deer with a passion. If they could eliminate them from the landscape they certainly would, they are nothing more than an impact to their bottom dollar. Everyone that ever gave us permission would always strictly instruct us that we had to fill every doe tag we had in order to hunt, they could care less if they are left out in the field to rot.
I also don't for a second think everyone that hates hogs only does so because they were "told" to. Perhaps I tossed that out too generally. I think that is the case for many. Most others hate them because of either a financial impact, or because of their impact to another species they prefer to hunt. There are countless TV shows where they are hunting giant bucks and nuisance hunting does in suburbs full of mcmansions. Whitetail deer actually thrive in close proximity to humans. It would seem you can have large healthy populations of deer in environments that are not at all a representative of a healthy "native" environment. While MS has one of the highest hog densities in the country, we also have the highest whitetail density, both growing. Both deer and turkeys are expanding there range within the US. Not sure on deer, but there are states in the US where they have, and you can legally hunt turkeys where they were not native to that state. They have been introduced and flourished through conservation programs, but that large bird that was not originally native to the area is impacting food and carrying capacity to some other creature.
Perhaps I didn't articulate the log landing point well enough either as I was hurrying to type from my phone. Hearing somebody rant that hogs are destroying the property, while we stand in a log landing full of treetops and heavy equipment, on a lease that has been clearcut of all native trees, planted in a GMO pine tree, then sprayed as those trees develop, to me is an intellectually dishonest argument.

Whitetail are responsible for more financial agriculture loses a year than hogs across the country.
And there as non native and invasive as the white man, they came with European settlement.
I enjoy hunting them and having them on my place. And I'm a land owner, not hunting leased land. I seem to have a healthy population of deer and hogs. I don't disagree with what they can do to turkey nest. While antenatal though, I've seen turkeys make a healthy comeback around me while covered up in hogs.
I think people are programed to hate them as was said above. I just have trouble buying the argument they are "rooot8ng everything up" in an area where people are pulling disc and spraying glyphosate to purposely plant an non native plant to feed the deer. Whatever your thoughts are on hogs, that just seems like and intellectually dishonest argument. I remeber hunting a lease years ago where we had a fair number of them, and one of the members was going on a rant about them tearing stuff up, while we were standing in about a 3 acre log landing covered in pine tops knee deep and looking down thr hill at skidder ruts you could disappear into.
Don't think for a second the real big money behind big ag that wants to develop poisons and such for wild hogs would not like to do the exact same thing for whitetail deer

And hours, will come down to how it's maintained. If probably maintained and it's a good deal, I wouldn't be scared of a couple thousand hours, most of those 4cyl type engines are good for 8 to 10k hours if maintained.
Most of the compacts are not going to have enough hours to be broke in.

Like Mc said, go bigger than you think. I'd go as big as you can haul. I've never once wished my tractor was smaller, but even with a 75hp I've wished I've had bigger several times.
You will lose some HP with HST when it comes to pulling a disc, but if your just doing food plots and such, it's probably not a big deal. If you don't plan to use around a manicured lawn or anything, I would try and get a rig with R1 tires vs the r4s you see on most compacts. The r1s pull much harder when pulling a disc or plow.

re: Deer hunting around Poplarville MS

I live on the Carriere/Poplarville line, on the west side. My land borders old river wma. There is some great deer hunting along the bottom land of the pearl river in carriere and poplarville. Try and do your homework best you can, because I've found hunting quality can vary greatly around here from area to area withing just a few miles. There are lots of hogs, and turkeys seem to be making a good comeback in pearl river county. I've been up here since 08, I'd be glad to any specifics i could about a certain area.

I had planted 6 acers of sunflowers. They came in great, had a few deer browsing them. They got to about 12" tall and in two nights the deer mowed all 6 acres to the ground. Sprayed it and started over with millet. Millet looks great, going to start cutting straps into it in another two weeks. This is pearl river county MS

I've used these people for perforated aluminum sheet for a few jobs I've done. They probably have what your wanting, they are generally not cheap

re: Has anyone bought large swaths of cheap crappy land (desert, swamp, etc)?

I live on 80 acres that I picked up on the cheap, I'm an hour and 10 mins outside of new orleans. Iv3 got 30 high and dry acres (where my house and shop sit) in the x flood zone, the rest will experience back water flooding from the pearl river when it hits 19' @ Bogalusa. Place had been clesr cut a few years prior to me buying and is just a natural regen thicket, but I got it crazy cheap and it is absolutely full of deer and hogs. On top of that I border thousands of acres off me west property line I can walk right off into. I had beeb looking for a place in this specific area and just happened to luck into this piece and was ready to jump when I got the chance.
When I was building my current home, which is on a piece of acerage I hunt on, I had a period of time where I had a bunch of equipment and such as well as my shop built and wanted to keep eyes on it before I had my road fully gated. I bought the Reolink cellular security cameras. I have three of them now and they have been fantastic. Since the house is done, I've moved two of them to feeders and they work as well or better than any trail cam, and you can pull them up in real time and have full pan tilt zoom.
I had the same issues with all the other cellular game games I tried, seems they would work a few weeks or month at best before they would stop transmitting and r require pulling them and a customer service call

I have. Done the late muzzle loader a few times, but want to bow hunt. When I hunt MO, we stay in Iowa and are hunting just a mile across thr border into MO
5th year putting in for archery in zone 4, unsuccessful. Should finally get it next year. Will be hunting the MO side thr border again this year I guess.

It's always been required for any boat under 20'
Most get around it by issuing a state hull number. LA use to actually sell most of the builders mentioned state issued hull numbers, this would be the same type hull number you would end up getting with a home made boat. It was common to have a hull built by a builder with a builder code assigned to them, but the hull number on your hull would start with LAZ
The big change is on the mudboat and airboat hulls. Most all builders, myself included, had exemption letters that allowed for thr surface drive hulls to be built without foam. Same thing for airboat hulls. The coast guard has done away with that, now requiring level flotation equipments for sub 20' mudboats and basic for airboats.

I am, but can't hardly keep up with what I got
When I built my new place last year, I built my shop and started moving some equipment out here before I had my gate up and place secured. Not that I'd had any issues, but bought 3 of those Reolinks to watch over my shop, equipment and road. They worked flawlessly for that, and as soon as the house was done, it left the one up at the entrance gate to my place and moved the other two onto feeders. My only cell came experience prior to this was with spy cams, which were terrible for me, but the reaolinks have been fantastic and completely trouble free for two years now. No problem ever logging in, can pan tilt zoom remotely and you can remotely format the SD card. I have been very pleased with them.
