Somebody explain to me youth rodeo Steer auctions?

Some kid just sold a steer for 550k at the Fort Worth rodeo.
Does this money go to charity? Is it tax deductible? Is the steer worth a lot for breeding?

Not sure the answer to your question but I’m gonna guess it’s not this one

Thanks for the help. I just googled it after your response and realized a steer specifies a castrated animal.
Typical OT, only sarcastic responses.

It’s just a venue for people to show off how much money they have to waste.

No, usually the FFA kid gets the money as his own "scholarship" for school. That steer has likely won Grand Champion at another rural show as well. February is old for those animals and they've had a few more months to mature

Say you don’t understand what a steer is vs a bull

Damn. In my 60s and didn’t know that about steers.
Puts the drill sargent’s comment about steers and queers in a new light for me.

I’ll be honest and say that I just thought steers were younger bulls because they look smaller in the events involving steers that I’ve been to at the various rodeos.
I enjoy going to rodeos as a spectator. I’ve never worked on a farm.

So some rich dude just throws 500k at a cow that they then slaughter?

If they want to trailer it off and process, yeah. It's marketing for business at that point. Or they can just release the steer back to the kid and it will end up on their plate. A steer is worthless otherwise.

Cows have cankles now as a desirable trait?

I'm a former FFA boy although I never went in for the livestock show part. It always seemed fricked up to me to treat an animal as basically a pet for months or even a year or more, get attached to it then kill it.

Dam. I was in 4-H from 4th-12th grade and raised steers to show and sell. Most I ever got was about $2K. This and hogs pretty much paid for my college. Had about $25K once I graduated.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo does the same thing for many if not all of their winning animals (and the FFA kids who raised and showed them.)
I vividly remember our boss distributing meat from a calf that he had bought after one such show, and darned if the next day, our Company received a thank you note from the kid, and talking about Charlie Calf and how much the kid enjoyed raising him and he wished us enjoyment of Charlie Calf.

My nephew showed pigs and chickens in HS. He still makes money selling show pigs, he also makes good money judging shows too. They'll get 250-500 to judge a show and it only takes a few hours. He also trains 4H students how to show pigs, he gets paid for that as well.

Show swine seem like the easiest to project as a kid IMO. Good return if you can make sale. The local festival in October will fetch a reserve or grand champion pig up to 3 or 4 thousand. All to the FFA/ 4H kiddo. Not bad.

a lot of money is thrown around at these.
Hell my buddy’s daughter sold a loaf of bread for $500 at one.
