It did, and I really felt for Cosell on that one. As aggravating as he could be, he was no racist and in fact, a champion of the black athlete, especially in the 1960s and 1970s as our country was coming out of de jure segregation. A poorly chosen metaphor for sure but very hard to believe it was malicious.
One of my favorite Cosell lines was when Dandy Don Meredith was unfamiliar with a word, I believe it was "wont," as in something someone is "wont to do." Cosell explained it and then seamlessly transitioned to game coverage by saying something like "the education of Dandy Don continues, we await the punt." Sorry for the trip down memory lane, but those were fun times/
