Is society actually healthier since cigarette smoking was restricted / banned?

Did people replace cigarettes in their mouths with excess food?
Compare people today to back then when smoking was more prevalent. The obesity levels today are staggering.
Maybe one addiction was swapped for another (I think so), and if that is the case, is the new food addiction any better?

No, but it's not because they don't smoke anymore.
Are you suggesting that Fat smokers would be healthier than plain fatties?

People got fat because of it
Cigarettes aren’t even bad for you they were invented by Indians and they were in tune with nature

The big difference is how it affects others around the people indulging. People pigging out at the table next to me doesn't affect others, but secondhand smoke does. Very glad "smoking or non-smoking?" is a thing of the past.

I’d like to see the data on historical nicotine ingestion trends. I think a lot of smoking was just replaced with dip, pouches, vapes, etc.

Personally I think those effects are way overblown.

100%
Unless you’re a lab rat getting bonged out 24/7 by second hand smoke.

There is a bar/restaurant by my office I grab lunch from sometimes that allows smoking. I'm not mad about it (I do it voluntarily), but I certainly don't enjoy being in a closed room with a bunch of cig smoke and try and get out of there quickly to keep it off my clothes.
It's nuts that my college years were spent in rooms just like that and far worse, night after night for hours

I still remember the smoking rooms at LA state offices. 10x10 room with 7 or 8 air purifiers trying to keep up.

I notice people seem to look younger and no longer have that "I smoke two packs a day coloring".

Idk about unhealthier cause there's still the cancer thing with cigs, but fatter? Yes we are fatter now, and your point about food addiction is accurate. More people have addictive tendencies than we think. Food is absolutely being used these days to numb stress, anxiety, shame, and other strong emotions, that smokers would just use cigarettes to numb. Maybe those people would have picked up smoking instead of eating when they were feeling stressed, if it wasn't so frowned upon now and banned in most public areas. You can whip out a bag of chips or candy at work or in class, when you have a hard test or long meeting coming up, but can't really rip a cig wherever you're at anymore.

In late 1800's when Duke Tobacco drove the switch to machine-made cigarettes people were calling them "Coffin Nails". When I was a kid and seemly all adults smoked, "Cancer Canes" was the term used by the people puffing away. Street wisdom had it figured right long before medical statistics were compiled.,,,Smok'em if you got'em".

Yes. And our weight problems aren’t produced by too much food as much as what’s in our food. They don’t want you heathy.
