Any OTers, take part in the stool transfer for gut health. Heard it can reverse a lot ofhealth issues?
quote:
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for weight loss involves transferring healthy donor stool into a recipient to alter their gut microbiome, with some studies suggesting it may improve metabolism, reduce waist circumference, and aid in weight loss for obese individuals. However, results are mixed, with some trials showing no significant weight loss compared to placebo, particularly if diet remains unchanged.
Key Aspects of FMT for Weight Loss:
Mechanism: Researchers aim to replace a "dysbiotic" (unhealthy) gut microbiome with one from a lean donor, which may improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and potentially reduce calorie absorption.
Effectiveness: Studies show varied results. While some indicate reductions in BMI and metabolic improvements, others have found no significant weight loss. A 2022 study showed that FMT did not reduce weight in patients undergoing bariatric surgery compared to those who did not.
Role of Diet: Research suggests FMT is more effective when paired with a healthy, high-fiber diet to support the "thin" bacteria, rather than relying on the transplant alone.
Procedure: The process involves transferring screened donor stool via colonoscopy, endoscopy, or oral capsules.
Future Outlook: FMT for obesity is currently in the research phase and is not a standard, FDA-approved treatment for weight loss.

Learned about this last year when someone at my wife's work told her they were having to do it. It sounds crazy but fixed a reoccurring issue that had put in the hospital several times.

I’ve read about it,not for weight loss. What I read was for treating problems like C.Diff, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel diseases, things of that nature.
Reportedly pretty effective for treating C.diff which can be life-threatening.

FMT is highly effective for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infections, achieving over 90% cure rates, and is FDA-endorsed as first-line therapy. It shows promise for IBS by reducing symptoms like pain and bloating, and for SIBO by restoring microbial balance. Emerging evidence supports its role in inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's), reducing inflammation and inducing remission. FMT also addresses chronic constipation by enhancing gut motility and microbiota diversity. While most effective for C. difficile, its potential for other gastrointestinal conditions is being actively researched, offering hope for patients with limited treatment options.

How does a fecal transplant work?
Every person’s gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, most of which are beneficial. These helpful microbes perform many important services in your body, including preventing unhelpful germs from taking over. But drugs, diseases and other factors can harm and reduce your supply of helpful microbes.
Your gut microbiome is a delicate ecosystem. When unhelpful microbes outnumber the helpful ones, that balance gets disrupted. A fecal transplant is a simple and effective way to restore a healthy microbial mix. The thousands of helpful microbes in a healthy stool sample help repopulate your gut.
