SIAP

Hopefully they catch the POS that did this. Why, why, why would anyone feel compelled to shoot a bald eagle?

For Immediate Release
Jan. 30, 2026

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) officers are investigating the illegal shooting and killing of a bald eagle in Vermilion Parish.

LDWF agents were notified about an injured bald eagle at the intersection of Robert Road and Wilmer Road in Erath on Dec. 5, 2025. LDWF personnel located the injured bald eagle and brought it in for an examination.

During the examination, it was determined that the eagle suffered from a fatal gunshot wound and the eagle succumbed to this injury shortly after discovery.

A reward of up to $6,000 is being offered to anyone with information that leads to a conviction in this case. The reward consists of $2,500 from the Humane World for Animals, $2,500 from the USFWS and up to $1,000 from Louisiana Operation Game Thief.

Anyone with information regarding the illegal killing of this bald eagle should call the Louisiana operation Game Thief hotline at 1-800-442-2511 or use LDWF's tip411 program. To use the tip411 program, citizens can text LADWF and their tip to 847411, or download the free "LADWF Tips" iPhone and Android app.

The hotline and the tip411 program are monitored 24 hours a day. Upon request, the person supplying the information can remain anonymous.

The illegal shooting and killing of a bald eagle is a federal violation of the bald eagle protection act. The penalties for killing a bald eagle brings up to a $5,000 fine and one year in jail and a civil restitution fine up to $5,000 will be assessed.

I can’t imagine the deranged person that just kills stuff for no reason. Bald eagle aside. You see a cool creature and think killing it is cool.

Who would shoot it and leave it on the side of the road?

At least abide by the the S's if you're going to do something so stupid.

I was close to 30 years old before I saw one. Hope the killer is caught and the one year in jail is carried out.

I saw a Bald Eagle just outside the big "town" of Point Blue, La about a year ago. He/she was atop a telephone pole and made direct eye contact with me. I was shocked to say the least. The first thing I thought was if it knows whats good for itself then it would leave. Haven't seen it since.

Hopefully it was just passing thru.

Haven't been endangered since 2007, and populations are 5x more now than at the point of their removal.

I get the national pride aspect, but the bird is approaching a half million known birds if I remember correctly.

The bald eagle is effectively a handsome buzzard. Ben Franklin was right, the turkey would have been a more fitting bird.

Growing up the idea of seeing a bald eagle on my farm in SW Ga was something I’d never dream of. A few weeks ago one flew down to the road in front of my farmhouse and grabbed fresh roadkill

I was in outdoors a lot 1973ish till now... Saw 1 bald eagle near myrtle grove 1977. Did not see another till 1983 near boutte there was a nest feds were watching. since then population steadily increased. saw two hunting roaming cats in river ridge two weeks ago.... I see more eagles in a month now than i had from 1983 through 2013.

saw 6 today 2 adults and 4 juveniles.

They are everywhere now, but up in Canada and Alaska, couldn’t believe how many there were, anything dead has like 20-30 eagles on it, it’s the vultures of the North
