A Nashville family bought a generator to heat their freezing home during the ice storm, only to be told by their homeowners association to remove it immediately or face fines.

Talia Caravello and her family have been without power in their Wedgewood-Houston townhome since the storm hit Sunday morning. With indoor temperatures dropping to 30 degrees, they drove to Spring Hill to find an available generator, spending around $1,500 on the unit plus extension cords and space heaters.

“We were so happy, and we were able to have our friends here who also didn’t have power,” Caravello said. “We all got to be together, and you know, that makes it a lot better when you’re hanging out with people that you love. But even sleeping at night, it’s still tough, no matter the layers.”
quote:

But just hours after starting up the generator, Caravello received an email from their HOA management company, Metropolitan Properties, demanding they “remove it immediately.” The letter cited fire hazard concerns and said the generator didn’t fit the community’s aesthetic guidelines
“Super angry because why is that even a possibility right now? Why do they care so much when people are just trying to stay warm and survive?” Caravello said about being forced to move the generator inside.
quote:

The family had been trying to stay in their home despite the brutal conditions, using candles and running faucets to prevent freezing.

The HOA initially threatened to fine the family if they continued using the generator. The letter sent to Caravello simply thanked her for “helping to keep Southview on Second Townhomes an attractive and desirable place to live.”

However, after WSMV repeatedly contacted the management company, the HOA board agreed to make a one-time exception, allowing Caravello to use the generator until power is restored.

Due to the recent weather-related issues and the loss of power at the property, the Board will allow temporary use of the generator.”
These HOA are out of control

If you don’t like the rules then move somewhere else. We live in a society. Fall in line and freeze to death so property values and community aesthetics are maintained. It’s for the greater good.

I can guarantee they handled this far better and more civilly than I would have.

Hoa is what leftists jerk off to.

Let’s not allow the genny since no one else can afford a genny and penalize this one family and their children.

It’s shite like this that drives me mad.

Someone somewhere worked hard to get the money to buy that generator.

frick that hoa.

Yea they only agreed to this after it got on the news. I live in a subdivision but it’s in a rural area. We had some people from up north moved here and wanted to start a HOA. Myself and other neighbors shot that shite down quickly

So this was a condo and they were running the generator on their back porch. This is not terribly safe and would be annoying as hell to neighbors. Imagine every person in a condo complex doing the same thing.

That said, frick HOAs and people gotta stay warm.

Incredibly dangerous actually.

Super incredibly dangerous

Crazy that they would push that issue during a power outage.

I hate HOA's but I would love to see the actual details of this. Was it an issue because they had a generator at all, or because they were running it on the porch of what I assume is a connected townhome community?

Running in on the porch is potentially hazardous.

Nah, they all live in St Tammany Parish and got voted to the parish council which has become a parish HOA.
