That was 40+ years ago. No.

Lot of family reunion types who hang out on the weekends leaving a trail of litter behind them

I’ve always thought the lakefront is a big missed opportunity for New Orleans. Seems like a great resource that the city could do something great with.

Doesn't even matter what the first sentence is, it's true across the board.

The Lake Shore - Lake Vista NIMBYs pushed politicians to keep people away with limited hours, one way streets and patrols that limited any kind of fun.

Freaknik Nola was pretty wild there when I drove through it in 2003/2004.

"Those" people hang out on the other side of the lake now

When they stopped making the Camaro and Firebird, it was a big blow to this phenomenon.

There was a cars and coffee event at the lakefront this morning. Always well attended - but that’s about it. Cruising on a Sunday was a good time.

Damn, I didn’t notice any Altimas with blaring hip-hop, but I couldn’t help but notice the sound of V8 powered boats roaring by. Al Copeland used to run one of his boats out there regularly…

As a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's it was normal for us and other family members to head out to the lakefront, get there early and get one of those covered pavilions for the day.
The grownups would sit in the shade all day grilling, drinking beer, playing cards, etc. and us kids would get waterlogged with being in the lake so much.
A few time we didn't even want to eat because of the dreaded "30 minute" wait after eating before we could go back in the lake under the parental fear of drowning if we got in the water earlier.
As a teen, me and some of my cousins would go out there and hang out, tan with our bodies slathered in baby oil for that deep skin cancer inducing tan and pick up girls----------or try to at least.
Been many years since any of that has happened. Now, it's just the wife and I heading out to catch some sun, lake breeze, watch the sailboats navigate the lake and check to see who's catching what on their poles.

the problem is lack of shame, discipline and respect in America makes anything “free” basically a non starter in any big city in America.
anything free goes to shite immediately unless you’re in a suburb.
