PSA for prolonged freezing temps and outdoor tankless water heaters

Make sure the pipes coming out of your house into the unit and back out of the unit and into your house are insulated. I found out the hard way years ago they weren’t. Had to gently thaw them with propane burner for a turkey fryer.
I later wrapped them pipe insulation and packed more OC fiber insulation around them. No problem since.
Just FYI.

This post was intended for those with homes that don’t have wheels or underpinning.

I would hate to be the guy who has to repair those if they go bad. It is definitely a tankless job....

USAA texted me to remind me not to use gas generators indoors. Passing it along.

If just one child is saved because of my useful notice - it’s worth all of the abuse I’ll get in this thread.

And keep space heaters away from rugs, curtains, bedding, etc.

The tank WH was against a wall in an unfinished basement so we had to move it outside when we finished the basement and went to a gas tankless. That’s where the gas and water lines were so it was the easiest path.
For the baws that read this, a basement is an area under the main floor of your house due to having a lot that has an elevation change from one side of your house to another….thus providing extra space.

Yes they will freeze up. A couple of years ago we took a hair dryer to them for about 10 mins each and they became unfrozen. Once it opens up leaving them running for awhile

It’ll literally be below freezing for a handful of hours. Geez.

I'm a plumber.....why would you not have insulated your incoming supply that is exposed to the elements from the get go? Don't be that guy. Use common sense.
