Looking to add a set of adjustable dumbbells for me and my SO. I had been looking at the Snode and Rep Pepin ones because they are the most durable with all metal moving parts, but they only go up by 10 and I’d prefer 5 lbs increments. I know the Nuobell go up by 5s but I’m concerned about their plastic parts breaking. Also looked at MX select but they only go up to 55lbs if do 5lb increments. Thoughts? Suggestions? Any personal experience with any of them?

PowerBlocks

Check these out. I have the expansion that goes up to 70lbs. Great Price, great dumbbells. Check out the reviews on that thread.

In our office gym we have two sets of Bowflex adjustable dumbbells. They are in 5lb increments. Got them cheap off of Facebook Marketplace.

unfortunately my SO doesn't find powerblocks "aesthetically pleasing" so those are out.

That’s a shame. I have a testimonial for PBs as well. Had them for quite some time. They get the job done

She does realize that they aren't to look at, but to lift, right?

Oh I know.

How do the cages work when you do pull overs and overhead tricep extensions? Do they interfere?

MX has a new one that goes up to 90 or 100 I think. When I upgrade, it’ll be those or the Reps

Edit: MX100 Evolution $849, doesn’t ship til March though.

thats the one downside to the PBs. it makes those exercises hard but you can do single arm extensions overhead holding the handles. can hold the whole DB for pullovers

the peppins have a cage too and are similar. the nuobells hold up so long as you drop them

but to fix you problem of 10lbs increments, just buy the magnets that go on them. plate mate makes all kinds of different ones. this will allow you to go up in increments of 1.25.

powerblocks and peppins are still the best. you can look at ironmasters but they are pain to change weight on. I was say the MX would be third for me.

What don’t you like about the MX?

I can’t find anything about how much of a pain it is or isn’t to attach the magnetic weights to the Snode brand.

Nordictrack are cheaper and go up to 55lbs, in 2.5 and 5lb increments

Haven't had any issues with Nuobells (bought used), just don't drop them. Can get MicroGains plates to cover the 1.25-2.5lb increments

yea there are different ones you can add on, have the ones that go on the handles etc

and nothing wrong with mx or nuo....but the reliability and customer service with PB is unmatched.

with peppins....the way they are made puts them at the top.

yeah those peppins look nice. I see MX just came out with a new model and it might compete with Peppin.

CAP adjustable plate DBs

We got these for under $200. Go up to 100s in increments of 5s. Yes it takes way more time than a block, or a quick release adjustable DB set, but I don't care. They work great.

I pre-ordered the MX Select EVOs in 10-55 in 5 lb incements for me and the SO. They ship next month.

If I like them, I'll order a set of the 10-70 in 10 lb increments so we can both workout together.

I'll report back.

My Christmas gift to myself this year was iron Master dumbbells and bench. After using it for a few weeks I agree it's tedious changing weights but not terrible. I can change the dumbbell over in a typical rest period. The build quality is great. I think I'll pick up some additional attachments for the bench
