For those of you who live or have lived in Chicago, what's so great about it?

One thing I have consistently heard is that people who have lived in Chicago loved living in Chicago. Now, I want to preface that statement with the fact that these are people who assumedly have money to spend in Chicago.
But nonetheless, Chicago is consistently rated as a great city to visit and to live.
What's so great about it? What about its identity is original to it where someone who lives in Chicago associates it with a particular personality?
New York has its rich history and own identity. New Orleans does. Los Angeles.
Chicago? Just seems like a big city in the Midwest that gets absurdly cold and windy in the winter.

Great good of every ethnicity.
Great sports scene.
People there are generally very fun loving.

It's great.... for 8-9 months of the year.

Never lived in Chicago, but the food is outstanding. If a good steak is your thing, Chicago rivals any other city.

politics have changed it since I lived there but it was a great place, big city with a small town feel, great restaurants, bars, festivals, entertainment, good sense of community, up until last night the city and the 'burbs had to have an electrifying atmosphere, the people really get into their sports teams, still a fun place to go

You can still vote after you die.

Great food.
Traffic wasn’t bad.
Not as expensive as people would think
People were nice
Two major airports
All major sports teams
Weather can be sucky sometimes
I hated the crime there.

I’ve only visited many times, but lots to do, easy to get around, surprisingly walkable, good food and bars, great art and architecture, friendly people, Wrigly, nice blues and music scene, and it’s sparkling clean in the non-ghetto parts. It just has a chill vibe. It does seem like it would be a nice place to live, at least in the Summer. Winters are probably depressing.

It ain't their weather.

I live in the SW suburbs of Chicago.
I’ve lived in Baton Rouge, Mobile, Houston, Raleigh-Durham and Orange County, CA.
Outside of Raleigh-Durham, this is the best place I’ve lived. If the winters weren’t so harsh, maybe #1.
People are friendly. Where I live it’s incredibly safe and I can still pop into downtown and get an exceptional meal or get into whatever I want.
The falls are incredible. Going to the pumpkin patch and apple picking with the kids is a blast. Going to the Christmas tree farm is also pretty cool. The seasons are great. Winter is awesome for the holidays. Just gets old from Feb-mid April.

Great museums and food. All the bad restaurants close. Other than that just a typical big city with awful winter weather. It is fun to visit in the summer but I would not want to live there.

Chicago is fricking awesome
Food, outdoor activities, etc.
It’s like Florida and New York combined in summer with the beach right there

Doesn't everyone want to live in a John Hughes movie?

The Chicago "beach" is cool for a big city but it's nothing like the real beach.

It’s sand and water and beachside drinks, it’s exactly like the “real beach”

It’s a massive, aesthetically pleasing city with far more “normal” people than LA/NY/Bay area, at least from the perspective of someone not from the coasts

Never lived, but I've visited the past 2 summers and it's a really fun place

Zero employment opportunities or anything to do. City with 2.7M people and area with 9.4M people have no jobs. Everyone is on EBT and stares at the wall all day
