How is this not under duress?

Take Chambliss or Lacey even for instance. Youre still playing a season and your coach comes up to you and wants to lock you in for another year.

19 to 22 year olds... what are they supposed to do? They can either sign or their life will be hell until the portal opens and if they are still in playoffs etc thats a problem.

They all fell for the we are America’s team story as well. I’m sure there are several regretting that decision this morning.

The portal was open when these 2 signed their deals. They just didn't enter the portal. They could have if they wanted to.

How much more do they need to be coddled. They have agents. They are, by any meaningful definition, professionals. Could they get swept up in the emotion and make a bad decision? Sure. But that’s on them.

Could sign an MOU. Those can be written up to not be quite so legally binding, but it's a signature to make everyone happy in the temporary.

Signing a contract extension during the season for a college athelete is “under duress”.

Jesus Christ some of yall are soft.
And if lsu re-signed players during the season there is zero chance this would be the reaction.

I feel like there would have to be some threat of reprisals if the players didn’t sign to make them think they were under duress.

You think Ole Miss was gonna bench Trinidad? Or Lacey? Or their starting O-line?

Occam’s razor is a better explanation. “Hey we are going to give you a lot of money to stay at the place you are already at with a bunch of people you already know”

I hear what you’re saying but the rest of the comments clearly didn’t.

If you all think one of the best players are going to enter the portal or quit on their team during a playoff run youre mentally insane. Considering that’s what lane did and how that’s been handled by the media, what do you think they’d do to lacy or chambliss? What do you think their teammates would do?

This is why chambliss continued to say he’d weigh his options, after the season

It's no different than a pro team extending or re-signing a player before he hits the free agency market.

This is backwards. The players have/had the leverage. They were in the playoffs. Making their lives hell would obviously be counterproductive.

They wanted to return.

How IS it under duress?

Was Ole Miss threatening to bench Chambliss, Lacy, or any other key players for a national semi-final playoff game if they didn’t sign the deal for next year?

Ole Miss has done some retarded stuff during this whole saga, but putting players under duress to sign deals for next season right before the biggest game in their program’s modern history seems far fetched.

No one is going to bench a QB, but if a lunch pail guy on a playoff run is told, "Sign, or you will be benched" is under duress.

Thats a part of it but they could be leveraged considerably when playing time in the biggest games of their careers is a condition of them signing as well. Ole miss was perfectly willing to sacrifice the trajectory of their season to spite kiffin, dont for a second think they wouldn't be willing to do that to a player that wants to keep his options open as well. One game could make all the difference in their perceived value.
