Conan O'Brien not a fan of comedians relying on hate of Trump, instead of actual comedy

- Jason Cohen's post shares a clip from Conan O'Brien's January 2026 Oxford Union interview, where O'Brien urges comedians to channel anti-Trump anger into humor rather than rage, framing it as a critique of "TDS-afflicted" performers losing their comedic edge.
- The video's key quotes emphasize humor as a comedian's "best weapon" against power, contrasting with O'Brien's own subtle Trump jabs in his March 2025 Mark Twain Prize speech, which drew irony-laced replies from users.

Seems like a shot at the current iteration of SNL & Jimmy Kimmel, among others.

Nor am I. But unfortunately none of the clowns are very funny to begin with.

Conan is not an angry person at heart. I haven’t watched any of Kinmel’s stuff but clicked on that. Who the hell outside of a very small, older audience would tune in for that shite? It was basically a shitty, angry political editorial. Aren’t these shows supposed to be fun and entertaining?

Jimmy keeps fanning the flames of hate and violence, I'll laugh bigly the day it comes for him.

Conan is my #1 comedian. Hes right. No one wants to hear a comedian preach. I want to laugh.

Seinfeld has already been down this path and was pretty much met with a collective, "OK, Boomer" from the interwebs edge lords. Conan will get the same.

I like Conan but sounds like he has a little TDS himself, which would make sense since he invited Rob Reiner and his son to his Christmas party. I miss the comedians that make fun of everyone.

The only time any of this “late nite talking politics” shite was funny was when Letterman was clowning Bush

relying on hate of Trump, instead of actual comedy

It’s not just comedians. It’s everything. South Park is currently suffering bigly by doing this. Late Night hosts have done it for years and viewership has gone down the drain.

Trump isn’t my favorite, and I get he’s easy to make fun of. But thats not even what they do anymore. It’s just shite talking and pure, unadulterated hatred now.

It’s just not funny…that’s my main gripe. I don’t care who gets made fun of, just make it funny and you’ll get a laugh or a chuckle out of me. SNL has become “hee haw durr durr trump sucks!” and it just sucks. Late Night is the same. South Park is the same. Hell, SP has made fun of things I like way more than Trump and it’s been hilarious (like Catholics, for example). The Daily Show is one the worst offenders. I don’t watch it but sometimes I’ll catch a minute or two after The Office reruns, and it just sucks. What’s funny is I actually don’t mind Jon Stewart’s jokes and comments, because at least he tries to be funny and sometimes the jokes land.

Daytime TV is similar too. The View would be off the air going on a decade now if it weren’t for Trump as a focal talking point. Companies like Disney and NF lost focus at some point and try far too hard to inject their politics into movies and shows, instead of just making things funny or interesting or entertaining. The fact that I know a company’s politics just from watching their entertainment products is a problem, and it’s far too common that I do.

At some point, society shifted and not only became more political, but identity politics became the center of it. There’s no nuanced discussions about any of it (which is the most positive strategy). It’s all or nothing, you either agree with me or GO frick YOURSELF; there’s no in-between. It’s dumb and it sucks. And it makes watching a lot of things a lot less fun. When entertainment shifts away from actually being entertaining, don’t be mad when people tune out in droves. Same with comedy…when comedy is no longer funny, people won’t be interested anymore. And that’s what is happening.

Trump is one of the lowest-hanging fruit when it comes to making fun of shite that he does. It should be easy to do. But instead everyone goes the “hate” route and it just comes off as lazy to me. So I’ve tuned out to most of it. Good on Conan for pointing it out, even though his contemporaries won’t care in the least.

Best part: Conan probably personally hates Trump and his stances. He’s just too professional to center his entire worldview on that hate and have it color his bits.

I agree. Like most people, I don’t like Trump either, but a lot of people have made hating Trump their whole personality. I’m sure Conan also isn’t a fan of Trump but keeps it professional. If he still had a late night show he’d make jokes because that’s part of the job, but people like Kimmel have based their entire career on it and it’s kind of pathetic.

I was going to reference the same thing. He tried to prove Trump wrong about Haiti, stayed at pretty much the only nice resort in the country, and walked around some areas with heavy security. It was a completely dishonest stunt.

But as others have said, he didn't make it his raison d'etre, and he doesn't seem to have hatred towards the right in general. He's made me laugh quite a bit via his late night show + some top tier Simpsons episodes, so he's fine by me.

I do wonder if Conan and others that outwardly have seemed to dislike Trump, actually voted for him & maybe actually like him.

They just put on the hate Trump act to appease the mob they live around.

There was a someone in the news not that long ago that said there are more closet ‘celebrity’ Trump supporters than you would think. Hell Trump is actually doing what a lot of OG democrats have talked about doing in the past.

Reminds me of something Norm MacDonald said often, that you can't really do comedy about someone you hate. It isn't funny if it's projecting hatred.

I think it's harder to do political comedy today because we're so inundated w/ political messaging across all media today. Most people want a break from that and a chance to escape real life. The niche audiences that exist for Kimmel or Colbert are just flipping the channel over from news or talk shows, trying to keep their hate endorphins ginning. But network shows are designed to maintain engagement for small targeted consumer segments, not to entertain a broad audience.

When I go to stand up comedy open mics, I hardly see any attempts at political humor, because they get no reactions from a real live audience that doesn't have TV producers telling them when to applaud and editing the sound.

Comedy is also a form of escapism. It's where we go to forget our troubles and aggravations. People who hate their jobs, are sick of the news feeds they get and go home to a crappy marriage or whatever don't want another shite sandwich shoved down their throat - even if it's a clever, well made shite sandwich. They just want to laugh and forget all of that stuff, just for a moment.
